Hey guys.

I started a tactics thread about a week ago I think and asked what some of the best "green" backups for my Deathwing would be. I narrowed it down to a Mortis Contemptor, Dual or triple whirlwinds, or vindicators. After some consideration I have written up two lists which I think will be fun to play, and agree with many of the models I already have. Let me know which list you think is best!

Keep in mind that I am semi-competitive but mostly play pick up games at the local GW or friendly garage games with my buddies... of course, we have a bit of a rivalry and winning is always good

Main opponents are:
Imperial Guard
Space Wolves
Necrons
Orks (lots)
Some Grey Knights
Some SM armies (BA/DA, vanilla)
Soon to be lots of Tau

List 1 (Super boom death time) - 1500pts

Spoiler:
HQ
Belial
- TH/SS (most likely)

Troops
Deathwing Terminator Squad I (5)
- Sgt. w/ TH/SS (debated if this is valid, but my buddies agree that the new FAQ is just worded poorly and the sgt should always be allowed to take this option).
- 3x TH/SS Terminators
- Assault Cannon + Chainfist

Deathwing Terminator Squad II (5)
- Sgt. w/ TH/SS
- 2x Powerfist + Storm Bolter
- Chainfist + Storm Bolter
- Powerfist + Storm Bolter + Cyclone Missile Launcher

Deathwing Terminator Squad III (5)
- Sgt. w/ TH/SS
- 2x Powerfist + Storm Bolter
- Chainfist + Storm Bolter
- Powerfist + Storm Bolter + Cyclone Missile Launcher

Heavy Support
Land Raider
- Storm Bolter

Vindicator
- Siege shield
- Storm Bolter

Vindicator
- Siege shield
- Storm Bolter

(I had an extra 15 points, hence the vehicle storm bolters. It helps keep the high strength guns alive)

I like to have a bit of a narrative "theme" to my armies and this feels like a total linebreaker / siege army. Hitting the front lines with a battering ram of armor and high strength attacks. TH/SS termies go in the LR and roll up the field supported by the vindicators. Belial and the two squads of Deathwing drop in on turn 1 (most likely) and shoot and claim objectives while the armored line pushes into the enemy position. The idea behind this was the act that, despite the super low model count, I have an armored wall coming for you and EVERYTHING is a pretty scary target. Every model in this list has at least a str 8 attack in some form or another. This list can do so much damage with such high strength that MEQ and TEQ will be very afraid of this list. My main concern is speedy lists that can get away from me, and anything with lots of ap2 and anti-tank. More likely than not the vindicators will get targeted immediately and die, but if they don't they can put some serious hurt on people. Of course, I have no ability to kill flyers but I don't think that at 1500 there will be many that can really bother me too much either, unless it's vendetta spam or something. Keep in mind that I have all the models for this list except for the vindicators.

List 2 (more balanced TAC) - 1500

Spoiler:
HQ
Belial
-Sword and Storm Bolter

Troops
Deathwing Terminator Squad I (5)
- Sgt. w/ TH/SS (debated if this is valid, but my buddies agree that the new FAQ is just worded poorly and the sgt should always be allowed to take this option).
- 3x TH/SS Terminators
- Assault Cannon + Chainfist

Deathwing Terminator Squad II (6)
- Sgt. w/ TH/SS
- 3x Powerfist + Storm Bolter
- Chainfist + Storm Bolter
- Powerfist + Storm Bolter + Cyclone Missile Launcher

Deathwing Terminator Squad III (6)
- Sgt. w/ TH/SS
- 3x Powerfist + Storm Bolter
- Chainfist + Storm Bolter
- Powerfist + Storm Bolter + Cyclone Missile Launcher

Scout Squad (6)
- Sniper Rifles x6
- Camo Cloaks x6

Heavy Support
Land Raider
Whirlwind
Whirlwind

Aegis Defense Line
- Icarus Lascannon (because i didn't have the points for quad gun)

The "theme" for this is that of a master and padawan type deal. The scouts coordinate the whirlwinds and provide overwatch while the deathwing go and beat the crap outta stuff. This list is more shooty oriented and is a bit more TAC to me. The scout squad chills at home and guards the objective and pins anyone nearby. Sergeant can fire the lascannon at whatever he needs to as well, including flyers. Should give me a decent amount of anti-tank in order to break through and let the TH/SS terminators do some damage. The whirlwinds are there to provide some longer range anti-horde, which Deathwing tend to struggle against. This list feels more balanced to me, but it also feels less "killy" in my opinion, and a little less fun. But I have all the models for this list except the whirlwinds and aegis.

Well, there are the two main lists I have come up with. Comments are appreciated.

Only if whirlwinds had access to hyperios launcher w/o FW, huh?

That would've made taking 3 whirlwinds worth taking

I think your conclusions are spot on. The first list seems a bit more killy, and the second seems more balanced. The first one is so much more "hit or miss" though. Either your vindicator's do what their supposed to and rip apart things, or they die really quickly or miss a lot.

I personally would run the second list, as its less one trick pony and has more tools to use.

Ugh, I still can't decide. I can only afford to buy one of these lists. Do any Deathwing players have any experience with vindicators or whirlwinds and recommend one over the other? I guess I could always use some rhinos as proxies and see which list I like better, but I really want to try and get a solid 1500 points finished this summer for a painting contest. Hrm.....
