Hey I'm fairly new to painting my models and I've got a few questions.
I just learned how to dry brush a bit and wash some models but I still consider myself a sub par painter.
My question is rather simple. When painting white models, lets take white scar space marines for example, what is te best way to go about it? I hear white is difficult to paint but it seems to me you could just prime a model white and already have your primary color done.. Or do you paint over your white primer with white...?

Any feedback is helpful thanks guys

White take a bunch of layers to avoid streaking. easy way is to just use a matt white primer for simpler table top models (white scars), but other then that, ether tons of thin coats or an airbrush works well.

Definitely prime white, save yourself a ton of totally unnecessary work.

Suggest you prime white, to save time, but you'll need to gently blend in shadows. That's the hard bit - too strong a colour, and you'll wind up with a very strange looking white.

If I'm painting white, I'll prime white, but basecoat in an off-white - I'm very fond of Vallejo's Ivory for this. It's a bit easier to blend colours into an off-white, then I'll use pure white to re-capture the highlights with an airbrush.

I find the whole process very fiddly for inconsistent results, so I do it very rarely. But my results are probably also the product of a great lack of practice.

I've never painted white marines, but I've done a number of white cloaks and robes with high elves. If you want it quick and easy, definitely prime with white. If you want some depth on it, you will have to be very careful with some thinned blue wash, really thinned black wash, or grey paint thinned down to a wash, and with one of those you'd want to wash JUST the crevices on the model very carefully.

Alternately, I've gone from a black under coat all the way to white using a grey base paint to provide a smooth layer over the white, then layered with thinned paints all the way up to white. Probably would have had an easier and quicker time using the first method.

I love painting white models, As stated a good white primer is the way to go. Once primed you can use a watered down wash or something of that nature to add a little depth the the model then just paint as normal.

When you can't see the drunk guy at a party, you should look for the nearest mirror.

Paint in a light grey colour.

Then paint a couple diluted layers of white until no steaks are visible.

Stay away from recesses so some of the grey shows up for a light shadow.

Washes can be a bit harsh to try to do to get those shadows hence starting with grey.

Think I saw something like this on "awesome paint job" on "how to paint black templar".
