Subject: Circle vs Legion - how the heck ...

Hey guys. After reading some incredible responses to my noob circle inquiries, I've been playing much better. I can pretty much get a grip on my opponent, and regardless of win or loss, I feel that I played my best. EXCEPT against Legion.
The Legion player I face get's all his amazing shooting units and beasts in range, and then just decimates my forces. I hardly stand a chance. Any advice on how I can get a better grip on him? I can't hide, so an all out charge might be the answer, because it's the only way I'll get any kind of DEF bonus vs shooting attacks, if I'm engaged in melee. Still, I don't think I'll be able to last any longer in combat.
Advice? There's got to be something I'm missing when it comes to fighting Legion.

Legion is a pretty bad match for circle. Eyeless sight really screws us over more often than not.
At my flgs, the only legion armies I face spam shredders, usually with ethag. Pop rabid, move up, pop ethag a feat, move up again in the same turn, decimate anything and everything with a horde of 2 point beasts. Really has left a sour taste in my mouth for playing legion, or even picking them up. I see other armies fielding wide arrays of models and abilities in order to form a cohesive force, while legion needs only ethag and a single type of model and they become pretty viable against just about everything.

eThags shredder spam, although fun to play from time to time, is not all its cracked up to be. Shredders are not difficult to kill, and the list is extremely linear, not to mention it has a real difficult time against high armor. Jam those rabid suckers up with fodder and focus on destroying the rest of their list. Also, he's on a large base, so it can be difficult to keep him hidden/safe. He hits like a freight train in melee, but he likes to throw his fury around so generally he won't be camping much. Honestly, up until eMorv dropped, pThags was the really difficult match for circle, and still is due to high arm skew, being able to attrition down circle. Purification alone puts a stop to his game, and Scales of fate is out of control amazing. What its capable of doing to the bell curve of dice probability is crazy, and puts a pThags player on tilt. With that said, circle suffers due to Legion's strength in range and Circle's lack thereof, eyeless sight ignoring terrain based defenses (this applies to beasts mostly as Raptors do not have hunter and neither do Deathstalkers, Striders+UA can be problematic), and our ability to be nearly as mobile as Circle. With that said, a Circle player can not play the same game against Legion as they do against other factions. Circle has many other strengths including amazing threat ranges that rival even Legion's and since Legion heavies tend to be on the squishy side, armor outside of Thags is usually not an issue. Apply a Warpwolf of choice to one of ours and watch it disappear. I feel there are several casters that have a game against Legion overall, eMorv being amongst the top competitively and eKrueger. Also, anything with immunity to fire is money against Legion since most of our Ranged attacks are fire typed. We also rely a lot on position and do not deal well with being moved around or any kind of board control. Effects such as telekinesis are very useful at getting to our tasty bits. Also, our beasts are able to run hot every turn due to our superior fury management, and thusly models such as shepherds and forsaken should be high priority targets. Spells that can dig deep into the lines or effects like Electroleap are very effective at removing such models and dramatically lowering our beast's damage output and overall effectiveness. I hope this helps. If you can provide more specific information on what lists/warlocks are giving you trouble we could work on solutions with the tools circle possess.

Sounds great, thanks for the responses.
I'll see what information I can gather about my last encounters with Legion. I've been looking into fighting with different Circle casters, and trying to amp up my range, damage output and survivability, WITHOUT relying on cover and stealth. It does feel a bit like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, but it's my only option. Terrain advantages, cover and stealth aren't doing the trick with legion.
Thanks again.

I think he probably meant concealment. Cover is pretty difficult to get, while Circle practically get concealment on a stick.

Also, you can get Gheto to crazy ARM with eBaldur, and with his natural DEF 14, it will cause Legion fits. We do not deal with high def well due to our overall MAT 6. We do have options and ways of dealing with it, but it's not our specialty.
Also, I'd try out the new Riphorn Satyr when he drops since he can get his arm up high as well and is pretty awesome.

Wold Guardians have obvious utility against shooting lists--not least because you can share Flesh of Clay with the warlock to ward off assassinations. Ghetorix has done well against the typical ELylyth gunline (you'll only get a couple of shots against him before he Hyper Aggressive's himself into melee) for me, and either Baldur has the ability to hand out cover and ARM bonuses where they're needed.

And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich." |
