I just recently returned to the game and while building up my Necrons again I keep seeing people recommend using Tesla almost exclusively when fielding immortals.

I understand that a 6 to hit is an automatic 2 additional hits; however the games that I've played thus far have not yielded a number of 6's that would yield more shots than if I just kept my rapid firing Gauss Blasters. This is in addition to the fact the gauss comes with an AP4 which, while limited, is better than no AP.

So at this point I have to wonder what it is I'm missing that makes Tesla better. The only advantage I see is that tesla is an assault class weapon in the rare instances were I charge with my immortals. But I cannot find any other benefit after monitoring 5-6 games and comparing.

Can anyone provide some insight into this?

Generally, cost efficient wise, it's better to take Warriors if you want Gauss. Tesla also out-preforms Gauss blasters an anything more than rapidfire range. You generally do not want your Immortals in rapidfire range. The AP4 also tends to matter little, with the abundance and ease of cover available.

More hits is exactly the idea. AP - vs AP 4 is negligible against Marines' 3+ armor save which a lot of people bring.

Space Wolves: 3770
Orks: 3000
Chaos Daemons: 1750
Warriors of Chaos: 2000

Just do the mathhammer - 30 gauss vs 30 tesla.

30 shots - 20 hits with gauss average versus 20 hits plus a bonus 10 hits with tesla for 30 hits... Now you can argue that gauss is rapid fire but then you have to be within 12".

The AP is a factor if you are playing against Tau, IG, Orks or Nids but it is a non-factor agains CSM, SM etc.

The only advantage to gauss is the autoglance on vehicles but Necrons have enough answers to that problem so unless you are facing a total mech list, the +10 hits is still going to result in enough glances on AV 11. So you are down to sweating AV 12 and the like.

30 shots on T4/W1:
Gauss will have 13.33 wounds and Tesla has 20 wounds

2+ armour: 2.22 and 3.33 kills
3+ armour: 4.44 and 6.66 kills
4+ armour: 13.33 and 10 kills
5+ armour: 13.33 and 13.33 kills
6+ armour: 13.33 and 16.66 kills

So what do we learn from this?
Outside of rapid fire-range, the Tesla only loses on 4+ armour.

So the AP is only relevant if you play against 4+ armour.
And if I play against Orks with 4+ I will focus my warriors on them while the Tesla takes care of the 6+ Boyz.

Gauss does glance, that is true!
That's why we take Tesla-Immortals together with a unit or 2 of Warriors.

Because there is nothing like scoring 12 hits with 10 shots.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
