I am thinking about getting into warpath and want to plan an army. How many points is a standard sized warpath army? How many points is the minimum for the game to work well?

It's still pretty much in beta stage.
I'd go for around 600-700 pts to learn the rules for awhile.
YMMV.

Well, the starter sets should be a logical starting point for the minimal effective force size

Corporation Starter Set has 26 models (2 10 man teams, 3 heavy weapons teams)
Forge Fathers Starter Set has 21 models (4 5 man teams, 1 vehicle)
Veer-myn Starter set has 25 models (10 Night-Crawlers, 10 Stalkers, 5 Nightmares)
Maruaders Starter set has 31 models (30 Grunts, 1 vehicle)

From glancing at the rules, it seems that 750 is approximately the absolute minimum. The starter sets are way too small to use as an army. Given that you have the chance to activate three units in one go, you would want more than that number in your army.

I would probably start with three or four starters to have the core of an army.

Well, aside from one 'gang up' game we have not run with more than a starter set per side. Orx vs. Forgefathers.

Really... enough there for a taste of the rules, but....

In our experience the Orx did very well the first few games, then the Forgefathers players figured out what to do and the tables turned....

I will agree to this extent - these rules definitely favor having a nice, large, balanced force.

\As it was - in the early games the Orx vehicles did a number on the Forgefathers, then the stunties started targeting the trike early, which more than evened the odds. The dwarfs don't have a lot of artillery, but they have enough.

The 'Gang Up' game (three starter sets, three players on each side) was a whole different kettle of fish - balance was a lot tighter, ending in a draw - favoring the Orx by 12 points.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

Thanks for the feedback Grump. I really like the Veer Myn and the Enforcers. I may build up the latter, as they will be fewer models to build and paint.

you can use just the starter sets but you will want to increase the size of your games very quickly. 2000 is a nice size but I really enjoy big games of 3000-4000, thats the highest we have gone so far.

If you're thinking of building an enforcer army it's worth looking at some of the enforcer threads around Dakka and the assembly tips they provide. They are lovely minis once assembled and well worth doing but putting them together can make you chew your fingers off in frustration if you're unprepared.
