What is the gaming like around Kansas City? I might be moving there in a month and would like to know if it is worth it to bring my stuff with me. I have a very nice crowd of gamers here where i am now and tournaments can be found every 2-3 weeks if need be. I am also spoiled with the terrain and quality of players in my area.

So essentially:

What stores are in a 40-50 miles area of the Berry Road/KC Airport area?
How is the player base? Competitive? Casual?
How many players typically go to tournaments? Prize support?
How receptive is the community to new players?

I appreciate the feedback! Thanks.

I dont know the MO gaming as much, but KC has a good selection of gaming groups around there. Last I checked they operate their own forum at frostreaver.net, but I have not looked into it in a while.

I have always felt welcome when I head to KC for tournies, and the ones I have been to average 8-10 players, the bigest was about 18 players, with enough tables to handle that many. This is based on local stores only, their is a group up there that runs larger tournies, I think they are called FRAG, and they run events. Prize support has been store credit in my experiences, with an entry fee per player going to pay for it.

Best of luck finding gaming in KC.

The Basement Games is right off of 64th street about a mile west of I-29 in Kansas City North. It is about 3 miles south from Berry Road.

Their address and phone number is:

I play warmachine and x-wing there on Sundays. They have a really good 40k group and play multiple days. The owners are cool people.

Since you are looking at the western side of KC, the three stores listed above are all good. Tabletop is a bit further away from the area you specified since it is located in southern KC in Overland Park. It's still worth the trip and easy to reach via the 435 loop. Indeed, all three stores are easy to reach from 435. The owners of all three stores are very nice. I played all of my tournaments at The Basement and 31st Century because they hosted more 40K tourneys, but I made monthly trips to Tabletop Games anyway because of the owner and the fantastic selection of games and miniatures.

Enjoy KC. I am hoping to get back there to settle down in the next 2-4 years.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

My knowledge about Tournaments and players is pretty limited, so I'll let others speak to that. I can speak at least a bit to the stores tho.

There is a small Games Workshop store in Kansas City Mo. Only has 1 or 2 tables, so gaming there is a bit difficult. But, being an actual GW store their selection of GW products is likely the best in the area.

There is Tabletop Games in Lenexa KS. As JB alluded to, the owner (Phil) is a fantastic guy - extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. And as mentioned, they have a fantastic selection of games and miniatures of all types. Possibly the most well-rounded selection in KC. They've got something like 16 gaming tables if I remember correctly - plus an awesome painting lighting setup.

I've been to 31st Centure games once and that was years ago. That said, they seemed to be a fairly large store with plenty of room for gaming. Only caveat I remember is that the tables on the outside edges were a bit close to the retail areas and can get a bit tight. Since I haven't been there in forever, I can't speak to their selection of merchandise.

The last major store is Basement Games in north KC. They moved to a new location relatively recently, and their selection of a lot of things is extremely limited. Their shelves are pretty bare and the last couple of times I've been there that hasn't changed. They have a fair number of gaming tables (I think 8), but my impression from the couple of times I've been there is that they seem to cater more towards established players who have what they need - they didn't even have the basic HQ/troops selections for most armies, and the newest box set they had was the Ravenwing Command squad. It's a store with potential, but if you don't stock it you can't sell it.

Finally, I've read about 2 other stores that are getting into 40k, but I've never been there so I have no idea what they're like. Collector's Cache in Lenexa KS - http://www.collectorscache.com/ and Limited Figures - www.limitedfigures.com in KC MO.

I've been out of the hobby for several years and am just now getting back into it. If you do end up moving to the KC area, feel free to message me and we can see about getting a game together.

there is a big 40k APOC game in November, in warrensburg, MO i know its a bit far for ya but they always have good turn outs every Saturday and host monthly turnys with a good bunch of folks. prizes are usually blister packs and the experience is relatively low/new to the gaming with a few of us having more then others but we are all relatively causal players some a bit more intense then others.
