Ok so this is assuming that the ATGM are taken in an army with eCaine, thus benefiting from his special rule which grants them Gunfighter.

Can they use their special attacks while in close combat? It never crossed my mind until I was playing a bloke at the gaming store with Skorne (Xerxis medium based horde, Certratii and Incendiarii...just brutal stuff. And they look amazing). I had always just taken it for granted, and used the special shots in close combat, but he asked if it was legal and after looking at my card I wasn't so sure, so I went with no for that game, but I'd like to get some groupthink going.

The rules, or at least the parts that I think are relevant, say;

(For ATGM Attack Type); "Each time this model makes a normal ranged attack, choose one of the following abilities:"

(For Gunfighter); "and can make ranged attacks targeting models in its melee range"

My question (and my opponents) was are the attacks made by gunfighter 'normal' ranged attacks, or just ranged attacks. I know that might sound like a silly question, and if it is then great, I just want some opinions because it is puzzling me and I'd like to make sure I get it right.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

You answered your own question, Gun Mage Attack types are still normal ranged attacks so there isn't any reason why you shouldn't be able to choose a special round while using Gunfighter.

Yeah it's just because gunfighter doesn't have 'normal' in it which made me question how I'd been previously playing it. Thanks though

A non-normal attack would be an out of sequence shot (or even out of activation).

I stand corrected.

Actually, you can make "normal" attacks out of sequence. A non-normal attack would be any special attack (including power attacks).

But yes, Gun mages with gunfighter making ranged attacks in melee are making "normal" ranged attacks, and can use their Runeshot abilities.
