Hi,

I am quite new to airbrushes and am finding it impossible to find any helpful information about adapters (all I get when searching is endless online stores). I have the following compressor:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004XP7K9W/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I decided to buy a Harder & Steenbeck ultra as better finer brush. Unfortunately it won't connect to the compressor. The end of the hose is about 1/4 inch in size and has a small knob which you can push down to release air. The new airbrush has hole that's about 8mm (female). When I try to screw one into the other there is a gap of about 1mm.

I also have another piece that screws into the airbrush which has the same end as the airbrush hose (but about 1mm bigger so it does screw into the brush) and a female end that is the same size.

I ordered a set of 'airbrush adapters' http://www.amazon.co.uk/pcs-Airbrush-Hose-Adaptor-Set/dp/B004GULP8Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369075701&sr=8-1&keywords=airbrush+adapter but none of these were any use.

Can anyone please help clear this up for me?

Thanks,

Thomas

Harder & Steenbeck airbrushes have the standard 1/8inch male bsp thread, if yours has something else, then it must have an adapter on it.
That compressor looks like it has a 1/8inch male bsp output, a regular female to female 1/8inch airbrush hose will connect them up, (the most common type there is- and comes with that compressor you linked)
I would reccomend getting a 1/8inch quick release coupling for the airbrush end, but its not neccesary, just a turn or two of PTFE Tape to ensure the joins are airtight enough.
edit; thats an AS186 compressor - again the most common type there is, I know full well that its a 1/8inch bsp output (universal really apart from badger products)
Honestly I dont understand the problem your having? The airbrush definatly has a male 1/8inch bsp thread, the compressor has the same, you wnat a 1/8inch female connector on each end of the hose and zero adapters. If your hose has a 1/4 inch fitting, then that set of adapters you linked contains the right one to make it fit, but you want one on each end if both ends of the hose are 1/4inch... far simpler to use a hose with appropriate fittings to start with, as more joins is more places to loose air.

Your brush looks like this?

You want this;

And 1-2 turns of this around the male threads before screwing them together;

Hi,

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. This is a picture of the connections I have on the brush and hose. They are different from your picture.

Looks to me like there an adapter on the hose and the airbrush already... do they unscrew? (might be a bit tight on at first... a pair of pliers might be needed.. but be careful not to damage things by gripping it really hard, maybe a bit of a rag between the part and the pliers would help.

If they dont come out, the airbrush looks like the 1/8inch female,
The adapter set you linked comtains a 1/8inch to 1/8inch male to male with a 1/4inch nut in the middle to tighten it with.
put that into the airbrush and then you will have the 1/8male thread on the bottom of the brush like I'm saying should be there... then a regular hose will fit

edit; be a bit careful to not remvoe the air input assembly on the airbrush as youl have a bit of a headache getting it back together properly

Your a genius thanks!

I assumed that the bit attatched to the bottom of the airbrush was a single piece but it turns out that it is two pieces, the top bit and a round tyre piece that screws on the very bottom. Once I seperated the two and used only the top bit the airbrush looks just like your picture. I also indeed did have an adaptor on the cable too.

I had tried quite hard before to remove it before but the critical mistake I made was not realising that the round piece with the rough edge is actually seperate and the end of the cable, I was trying to unscrew the whole thing which obviously wasn't working!

I have spent several hours trying to fix this problem, not including the time it took to remove the washing machine after an adapter rolled under it.

Thankyou very much.

So this is what the same thing (pictured above) looks like when properly disasembled

No problems, Harder and Steenbeck make beautiful airbrushes! I hope you enjoy working with it. I certainly enjoy my Evolution Silverline, it was the first H&S brush I've tried and I don't think il look back, the trigger is just great, and everything is so easy to remove and put back the nozzle design is innovative too! Its the Germans... notably very good at engineering!
edit; that part witht he thread ont he bottom and the air trigger button ont he top also comes apart into some small pieces that are tricky to re-assemble. I would reccomend you leave that well alone unless theres actually an issue with it
Another nice feeature of H&S is that it is a contained removable piece, unlike some other brushes.
The only thing Ive found that I needed special tooling for was the needle seal right in the center of the brush, it requires a special pronged screw driver too to properly align, might be useful tidbit when it comes to replacing it oneday (they will wear and tear) replacement seals are pretty cheap, and should be available at stores that stock H&S brushes
