Every batrep I have read, when someone fails morale I always see a scatter die next to the retreating models. Now I did not start playing until 6th ed but nowhere in the rules that I can find does it state to roll scatter, instead saying to move towards your table edge. So my question is why do I see the scatter die? Was it a rule in an old edition? Is it just rolled for flavor of retreating under panic? Or is it just there as a table reference for those looking at the picture?

Why don't you ask the people whose batreps you see?

Boom. You answered your own question.

Its just there to show which direction the unit is fleeing, as its not always easy to see in pictures where they are in relation to their table edge.

Maybe they put it there as a reminder that the unit is falling back and the scatter die just happens to be a convenient token (no blast weapons in their army), or maybe they just left it there and it's pure coincidence.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
