I have a 1750 point Grey Knights Inquisitor army that uses Coteaz so all of my troop choices are henchmen warbands except for one group of Grey Knights Strike Squad. Since I don't really want 'Grey Knights' in my inquisitor list I am painting them as Exorcists (grey knights successor chapter) but using the strike squad rules.
Anyway, my sons both have 2500 point armies (necrons and tyranids) so I decided to come up with an allied force and the Black Templars seemed the perfect choice, zealot space marines to fight with my zealot inquisitor! Here's the over the top unit I came up with...
HQ
Marshall w/ Artificer Armour, Power Sword, Storm Shield, Holy Orb of Antioch and Terminator Honors
TROOPS
10 Initiates w/ chain swords & bolt pistols (one w/ power sword)
10 Neophytes w/ chain swords and bolt pistols
HEAVY SUPPORT
Spartan Assault Tank w/ Armoured Ceramite and Frag Launchers
grand total, 745 points, so I don't have to take an Emperors Champion.
Are they going to be suprised when this thing dashes across the board and then disgorges 20 bolter shots and then 66 attacks into close combat! Overwatch? I fear no overwatch! Fun, fun, fun!!

HERESY!!
I think this falls under the category of Fluff Massacre...as well as rules massacre.
You cannot ally Black Templars with Grey Knights..(edit -I'm wrong, and legally you can)...nor should you ever think of doing so. The Black Templars will turn on those dirty psykers just as fast as they would the Tyranids. well, maybe not just as fast, but still pretty fast.

Do it... fluff bunny tears add +1 to your cover save.
In all seriousness its a unit, it should perform well at whatever you decide needs its attention.

Actually I'm sure the BT codec says they won't ally with any psykers except Grey Knights, so it's all good there man.
I love how over the top it is.

What you have done here sir is build yourself a Black Tide, however incorrectly. Scrap the Marshall and take a Chaplain instead. Use a similar loadout and bring 3 Servitors. Here are the benefits from using the Chappy:
Squad is now Fearless
Unmatched Zeal moves. Take a wound and move 9 inches towards any enemy unit in their shooting phase.
Three more meatshields with the Cenobytes.
Rerolling missed CC hits.
Thats a standard BT Black Tide and the bread and butter of most lists. A 24 man squad that will most likely hit enemy lines on turn two. If you had an Emperors Champion with an AAC vowthe amount of dice you throw would make Orks jealous. If you have the points then add a Power Axe and Flamer to the squad.
And you can in fact ally BT with GK. Makes no sense fluffwise but its in the BRB.

Why shouldnt the two most devoted and powerful factions of the 40k Univerum and Imperium not ally if they encounter a common foe (there are some of that out there)
And yes, the marschall is more fluffy but the chaplian is better rulewise.
Siednote: You cannot give Plasmapistols to Initates. I would recoommend:

I really wanted to go with a Chaplain but in order to do that and stay under 750 points I would have to drop Neophytes. My main priority was to have as big a unit as possible pouring out of the assault tank. To upgrade to a Chaplain and 3 Servitors I would have to drop 6 or 7 Neophytes and at that point then I might as well put the squad in a Land Raider Crusader. I have the Spartan Assault tank on the way and I want to fill it up as much as possible.
I am trying to do two things with the unit, first of course is for it to be effective, but second, and more important, is I want it to be a WTF? moment when I first deploy it, and the sight of 21 Marines charging out of it will certainly be a shocking sight.

Ha ha ha, that's funny. But really, the Black Templars have a major man crush (marine crush?) for the Emperor and he was the greatest psyker of them all. They love the Grey Knights because they are as close as they will ever get again to their beloved Emperor!

If you can fit a lightnight claw in there for the Marshall, you get to re-roll to wound.
Our BT player uses that set up and his Marshall killed Kharne in a challenge.

Alright, I decided that all of you telling me I needed to replace the Marshall with a Chaplain were right so I looked at the numbers again and came up with this...
Chaplain Reclusiarch w/ Terminator Honors, Artificer Armour, Bolt Pistol and Holy Orb of Antioch.
This brings the unit to 746 points of Templar pain!

I just math hammered a Reclusiarch w BP, TH, PF, 10 Ini 10 Neos w Frags, Axe, and Flamer at 486. I know you want to run that LR but take into account youre probably going to get that squad into charge range by turn two with minimal casualties by just footslogging it. That would free up almost two hundo for another Black Tide and more ridiculousness.
Of course you play GK so you can afford to play around. I only think in terms of maximizing effectiveness of a 9 year old book

The thing to keep in mind is the Spartan Assault Tank. I really like the model and have one on the way. So it's about what unit can I put in the Spartan that uses as much of it's transport capacity as possible, wile still being somewhat fluffy, and staying within my points limit.
Black Templars had the following going for them... Spartan rules allow Templars to use the vehicle, Templars are the only Marine Chapter I am aware of that can have a 20 man squad. One HQ, Troop and Heavy Support are allowed in the Allies rules, and I had up to 750 points to spend to get my main 1750 list up to 2500 points.
Space Wolves were another possible choice, with 15 man Wolf Claw units and an HQ getting me to my 750 point limit but the Templars just seemed fluffier.
