Lately I've been playing a bunch of lower point games, generally 1k. With what I have seen, the CSM codex really doesn't scale down very well.
With what I've noticed, cult troops are a no go, because they are too expensive. I would also like to avoid using Heldrakes, because I have a lot of AA in my area, plus I just don't want to use them.
A couple things that I think do well in low point games are: cultists-duh, spawn with a Khorne jugger lord. Autocannon Havocs- depending on the matchup.

What else can you guys think of?
Is there a truly competitive 1k CSM list out there?

I miss the good old days when a man would build a skyscraper with his bare hands just so you would stop hitting him with a shovel.

I will take a stab at it.

Lord, MoN, lc-95

Plague marines, 2 melta, rhino, hml-187

Total=999

First strike, rhino confers first blood.
Second strike, only 20 soldiers and 1 weak lord.
Third strike, no anti air units. However can replace 2 pred for 2 havoc squad with 4 ac each.

I like the noise marine list, but I'd cut one marine from the combat squad to get MoN on all the oblits.

I'd run with this.

HQ
Chaos Lord, Terminator Armor, MoN 125

Troops
7 Plague Marines, VoLW, 2 Plasma Guns 205
6 Plague Marines, VoLW, 2 Plasma Guns 180
6 Plague Marines, VoLW, 2 Plasma Guns 180

Heavy Support
5 Havocs, VoLW, MoN, 4 Autocannons 135
1 Obliterator, MoN, 76
1 Obliterator, MoN, 76

977 as it stands so you have a little room to adjust as you want to, maybe kit the lord out differently. I find with all the objective based missions that just controlling your deployment zone and the middle of the board wins you most missions. This army can do that, and you can even choose to DS the Oblits onto easy targets in his zone if they present themselves.

I disagree that cult troops are a bad option. 19 Plague Marines are pretty hard to kill thanks to T5 and FNP. And all the cult troop options are fearless, and I feel like that is often overlooked. I've had single plague marines left standing either holding an objective or denying someone else control of theirs; regular CSMs just can do that. They are always worth it.

I don't give a damn about GW, their crap rules, their extortionist prices, hot models, limited edition books, Digital Release and spam in a box armies. I don't care about Forgeworld or their shoddy resin and their wacky unit rules or whether or not they're allowed. I don't care. I don't.

I love Warhammer 40000 and if you want to try to spoil that for me, or impose your own vision of it onto mine, then you can go suck a lemon.

Heldrake I'd the best unit in the codex, and arguably the game. You're crazy not using them
