What I'm talking about is stuff like this.
Spoiler:

And this

Spoiler:

This recent trend towards absolutely monstrous (and expensive) models is really starting to bug me lately. These are Apocalypse class models getting added in to regular matches, and it's getting insane. What's next? Are the orks getting stompas in their regular codex? Does IG get to field Macharius and Baneblades? I mean, they're cool models and all, but they just feel horrifically out of place in the context of a "normal" game. This game has enough balance quirks as is, it doesn't need more, especially in the form of adding massively oversized units to games that are already getting pretty big to begin with. I'd have no problem if these models had been brought in for Apocalypse (I'd actually be all for it) but it just feels wrong to see these kinds of units popping up in 1500,1750, 1850, etc. games.

Am I in the minority here?

No You are not. It bugs me a lot because it makes me feel like they're just trying to force me to buy expensive models in order to have a somewhat competitive list.

I hate all these new big things. Most of them are just terribly lazy designs.

The Tygon, Stalker and Riptide are fine I suppose.

The Dreadknight, Wraithknight and Daemon Chariots are just stupid and ugly.

It does bother me. Even if they were fairly point sized, I don't want too much 'epicness' in 40k, which is.supposed to be more mundane

My issue is simply that they are huge for a 4x6 table. If you are deploying from the short edges, then ok; but starting off 24" apart from the long edge deployment is a bit wrong.

Not me. The Wraithknight looks fine leaning towards awesome, and the Riptide is decidedly amongst my favorites in the Tau line of miniatures.

As for competitivity, most new releases are a mixed bag. The Riptide is powerful, but the few local players who don't swear by it seem to be doing fine without them. In turn, the new Tau fliers are bottom end at best. Same can be said about the Chaos zoids. As for the Dreadknight and the Stalker, most GK and Necron players in my area skip them entirely.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Price and size are different issues, though. The Wraithknight sure looks fine (and I hope it's been written so as it is not a must have ala Heldrake), but it has also overstepped some red lines for what I was accustomed to. I like it, but its very existance makes me slightly uneasy.

Only problem I have with them is when they don't make sense or look pants; ala the Dreadknight.

I still refuse to dignify it with a name like "Dreadknight, to me it is the Holy Baby Carrier.

Not a great fan of super size me, maybe the design monkeys thought they should start pushing out the super heavy kits that have been sitting since creation?

As an apocalypse fanatic, I love the big models honestly. Though given that I have by now, so many Tyranids I have to set aside an entire shack in my backyard to fit them, I may have an unhealthy obsession.

Personally I love the Wraithknight and Riptide but have no affection for the Holy Baby Carrier. They look suitably epic in size (though given the height of flyer stands look like they're going to be collided with by the flyers on the field). It does however mean I need to expand my LOS blocking terrain up a level (I previously had no reason to make huge multistory buildings because whilst fluff reasons meant they could be there, they had little in game effect)

Well now, you can relive a Godzilla movie with just GW miniatures.

Honestly, I've got a bit of speculation on this point.

Apocalypse is going to be less of a dramatic departure from the standard play than it used to be. We're going to see Apocalypse being a lot closer to standard play. It might be something like "Apocalypse rules can be put into effect if you so choose; adjust the points totals accordingly" and things of that nature.

they remind me of action figures. if i wanted to collect action figures i would be doing that and not buying warhammer.

there's no real reason for it. they could easily have new units be just a bit bigger or in scale with everything else but just a new concept.

i feel like the sculpters are doing it more out of laziness because things are easier to make in a larger scale.

or it's probably because they can charge more for bigger toys . which is actually hilarious since these big robots are far cheaper to develop than multipart infantry and they have what, 2 cents more of plastic?

theyre exploiting how simple minds work. "oh it's bigger so ya i guess it's worth $150"

Apocalypse is coming out soon. Maybe it's a way of closing the gap between regular and Apocalypse games?

In keeping with the wraith theme, is the Wraith Knight going to have like...toughness ten? Because that'd be pretty evil.

Not me. I love the riptide and one day I'll gladly pick up a Wraithknight. I love the threat and power these gigantic mechs bring to the table. All my doubts about the Wraithknight vanished when I saw the WD picture with him moving to bring the fight to the enemy, sword in hand, Wraithlords and Wraithguards around him supporting their big brother. He looks so good.

And this is comming from someone who'll be on the receiving end of those gigantic kits. My AB are gonna have to do extra-time to bring down those giants!
