1 Icarus Lascannon

So HQ/Elite plays pretend Death Star and comes down on Turn 1 with one of the Grey Hunter Packs, PCS and SWS ride the Vendettas, and CCS and Blob camp in the ADL and fire off 5 TL Lascannons as often as possible (one with Skyfire, yay).
GH have Power Weapons mainly because of WYSIWYG. Probably a far better bet to drop one PW to make the Icarus Lascannon a Quad Gun, since the Icarus is inferior in every way to the Quad Gun. At the same time, non-character wielded Power Weapons could be interesting so I'll see how that goes.
Thoughts?

So I played a game this weekend using this list. I faced Necrons. I don't have his exact list but it was basically this:
Necron Destroyer Lord w/ Mindshackle Scarabs
Necron Destroyer Lord
Two units of x7 Necron Warriors in a Nightscythe
One unit of x8 Necron Warriors in a Nightscythe
Two Annihilation Barges
Unit of ~6 Wraith with some lashes (or whatever reduces Initiative to 1)
Unit of ~5 Wraith with some lashes
~200 point unit of 5 Destroyers
Mission was Big Guns with 4 Objectives and playing long ways. His scary unit of 5 Destroyers (AP 3 bleh!) had a reputation of doing nothing. His barges were scoring and Wraith are scary. He deployed his MSS Lord with the larger unit of Wraith behind a hill (Wraith are so tall I could still see half of them) with the Destroyers right behind them and the Barges nearby. The other Lord and Wraith were Deep Striking and the Flyers of course were i reserve.
I set up my ADL as far forward as I could. I had a building just behind the ADL. I combined my 3 IS and put them in the middle behind the ADL and the CCS with the Icarus on the right of the building. PCS and SWS embarked on the Vendettas. SWHQs and WG all rode in together.
My 2 objectives were 12" apart, one on the IS and one in the building behind the CCS. His were right behind the hill where he deployed and in a forest about 15" away and back.
He had won the roll for the Initiative and let me go first. He then tried to seize after having second thoughts about my Drop Pods. He failed.
So my Turn 1 I drop i my HQs/Elite and a Grey Hunter pack. I go crazy and decide to land right behind the Destroyers, with my HQ/Elite Drop Pod being 6" away from the board edge. The Grey Hunters are about 8" away. The Emperor is with me as neither Pod scatters. Disembarking, I'm able to get all 5 Destroyers in a line for JOTWW. Coupled with the 3 Preferred Enemy Combi-Plasma I'm able to secure First Blood and take out a roughly 200 point unit before it can do anything. My Grey Hunters open up on one of the Barges and pop its shields. My Lascannos are unable to see the Barges due to Night Fight but are able to wound a Wraith.
His Turn 1 sees his deathstar charge mine and his Barges unload on my Grey Hunters after scooting. His MSS nearly take out my Wolf Lord. He eventually (Turn 2 I think) kills the Wolf Lord, but my Wolf Guard hold out for 5 turns against this unit (the initial group of Grey Hunters ended up charging in and getting wiped). Eventually I wipe out the unit entirely, including the Destroyer Lord, but I believe that he Came Back.
The Lascannons perform amazingly. They pop one of the Annihilation Barges (the one that was AV13) and they wiped out both enemy Flyers thanks to Twin Linked Snap Shots. Even the Icarus turned out to be useful. I may keep it. My Vendetta Squadron wiped out the other Flyer the turn it came in as well.
His Deep Strike unit caused me grief however. I dropped off the SWS by my CCS to deal with them, and my Blob FRFSRF into them as well. 3++ saves suck to deal with though. My blob wiffed. My SWS also got FRFSRF and with the 3 Flamers put out an impressive number of wounds. They felled more Wraith than the Blob did. The Lord charged my SWS the next turn and the Wraith my Blob. i didnt kill anything and failed my Ld 8 roll and my nearly full bodied Blob ended up getting wiped due to a bad dice roll (he gets a 7 and i got a 5 ).
My second Grey Hunter pack however, holds his Warriors off his back objective and he has no scoring on mine. He has a unit of warriors running for his forward objective by the hill, where my PCS lands and scores. Game ends with me holding that objective, getting First Blood, Line Breaker, Warlord and both his Barges. He gets Warlord and Linebreaker. If it went on, he would have had two objectives probably though to my none.
SO lessons learned:
- Stopping power is important; so taking ACs over Lascannons is dumb. Just flat out. Never not doing that.
- Stubborn is crucial to Blobs, never not taking a Commissar or giving them Fearless/ATSKNF again.
- MSS suck to deal with. Can't tell if the Wolf Lord is worth it yet. He's another Grey Hunter squad in points, so might not be.
- The Icarus is useful if only so I have 2 BS 4 Lascannons with my CCS.
- The CCS is vulnerable and needs to be shielded
- 2 Vendetta with HB wreck face. Not a lot can deal with that firepower, and having them carry two punchy scoring units is awesome.
- Grey Hunters need to be used smarter. Charging the deathstar in the hopes I could kill them was not worth the risk
- Wolf Priest was amazing in combat with his 4++ and S 6 but his Preferred Enemy is wasted on the Wolf Guard in melee for the most part due to the Wolf Claws. Still is likely awesome for the Wolf Lord, but may need to drop him for the extra points.
Dropping the two PW and WTT gets me the points for a Commissar. Power Weapons may be useful, if I can find the 40 points needed. That said, against Wraith or Storm Shields it wouldn't have mattered if the Blob had any. Fairly sure I need 3 IS though, so I can have 3 Lascannons.
So will need to get a few games in against other armies. List can only be tweaked so much and its all on the SW side for the most part unfortunately....
So I'm thinking a 31 man Blob is overkill just to get a third Lascannon in the unit. I could be wrong, but we'll see what my options are here. I also feel that while the Wolf Priest performed admirably, he doesn't add as much as I need to the list for his point cost. Between the cuts I'm left with 181 points left over.
What should I do with the points? Manticore? Long Fangs? TWC? More Drop Pod mounted units? I'm also considering dropping the Wolf Lord because of his price point, but I like having a Warlord that is normally hard to kill. MSS are the exception, not the rule after all and I mainly killed myself.
Have you considered a 50 man blob with 5 dudes with power axes? i got wrecked by a guard/swolf list with that blob squad the other week, totally filthy!
He also had a Manticore which did really well
On the wolf lord front, i too liked to have a fighty lord (carry over from the old 'dex i guess) but i have decided that 2 Rune Priests is the way to go, one on divination and one with jaws who rides in a pod with a hunter/wolf guard squad
With the points saved by taking 2nd a rune priest instead of the lord you could add another terminator or two to the wolf guard pack? I have been really successfull running mine with combi melta's though, guess thats just personal preference

50 men is just too much for a blob. They don't do enough in most games. Also, you are looking at a minimum of 330 points then. Ideally I'd like to have 4 PIS, 2 with Commissars, so that I can run 2 20-man Blobs most of the time, and combine into a 40 man some of the time (such as during The Relic).
The problem I've had with Rune Priests as Warlords is that they die too easily and give up a VP. Possibly I've been doing things wrong, but the enemy seems to make a point of going for First Blood and Slay The Warlord in addition to an objective. Mind you, this is more than one opponent doing this. But there's a way to deal with that...
Let's stick the Rune Priest in the Blob. Don't need a Commissar then (ATSKNF will save us), and I don't need a CCS to give me Twin-Linked since I can just rock Prescience. We can replace the CCS with a Primaris Psyker if we want to gain Nightshroud, or Telepathy for either one of the Vendetta units or the Blob. Maybe. Not sure I want to lose a Lascannon. Will have to toy with that idea. The Warlord will be safe hiding in here regardless. Either way we can save 10 points for the Vox-Casters.
So just moving the Rune Priest to the Blob can free up 55 points! That means I have 236 points free. So if we drop the Wolf Lord (sad!) we don't need the Wolf Guard acting as a unit. Dropping their Pod and the Wolf Lord bump us up to 486 points free...
I still want the Wolf Guard. So I need to drop 2 models from the Grey Hunters. That's 60 more right off the bat. We're now sitting at 546 points at my Grey Hunters are costing me 190 points (Wolf Guard run 141). Add a third Grey Hunter pack matching those and I have 356 points left over.

Heh, well now I know what I'm going to do at 1500 points! Just drop the Chooser of the Slain. The real question now is do I go for more artillery (Long Fangs + Manticore minimally) or for more Grey Hunters so I can hit 1850 points?
