I have 1750 pt tourney tomorrow and I'm wondering if foot slogging is competitive? Just know my meta has a few tau players and very lil flyers...

Yes - wolves on foot can win.

I won several local tournaments with:

Logan
MSU cyclone missle squads (mostly PA, 1-2 terminators)
Long fangs
Lone Wolves
Scouts

I don't like scouts as much now, since they can't charge, but other than that...

I made super cheap DIY cyclone missle launchers from the Dark Angel upgrade sprue.

Since it's tomorrow it's probably too late for conversions, etc..

What kind of models do you own?

Thats a good start

Any terminator with an axe can be Logan.

Rune priests are good.

I won against old Tau without a problem, and I'm not sure they're much different from new Tau. Power Armour never relies much on cover saves...

They're not like most armies, where they can close the gap and negate your shooting. If they close the gap you auto-win with marines in combat. And you actually out-shoot them at 48" plus.

There's not much funnier than watching two railheads and a squad of broadsides shoot and kill 1-2 marines...

Two rune priests with Living Lightning
3 squads of 4-5 missle launcher long fangs
5 cyclone missle launchers

That's an average of 29-37 S7/S8 shots per turn covering the whole board. (Some of which can be Tank Hunter, if need be - thanks Logan)

Your S8 AP3 Krak auto-kills his crisis suits out of cover, and your frag missles are suprisingly effective against his token fire warrior squads.

I've found shooty foot wolves to be quite strong against all but the fastest assault armies, and the uber-shooty IG parking lot armies.

Don't run a foot list. There are just too many things that will eat you alive before you even get into bolrter range.
The TDA at the front of a squad won't help against them either.

Basilisks, colossi, heldrakes, riptides all wreck foot wolves. Get rhinos or get pods. That's the only competitive way.

You can do it, I'm just personally more of a fan of drop pods. Be warry that they are an easy first kill point if you don't wipe something out completely but DP JoWW can massacre castled tau

So don't take mech wolves, they get wrecked by autocannons, lascannons, missle pods, and quad guns?

Everything wrecks something else. This is rock, paper, scissors we're talking about.

If you saturate the field with bodies, most armies will have problems killing them all. If those bodies all have long range anti-tank and anti-horde shooting, that makes them a threat from turn 1 on.

The TDA doesn't go at the front - it goes at the back. That gives you multiple five wound, scoring, mobile missle platforms. A helldrake swoops by and burns 4 men. So what? Use your shooting for the turn to knock it out of the sky, then keep slogging forward.

Against Tau and IG you have to present other threats that they have to deal with - Bikes, Thunder/Fenrisian wolves, scouts, etc..

They will spend most of their shooting on the units closest to them, leaving your scoring troops alone. By the time they turn their attention back to your midfield/backfield, it's too late to do sufficient damage to prevent you from taking objectives. If they don't focus fire on the close units, they get tied up in assault and you've basically won. Either way, the whole time you've been pouring long range, high strength shots into them.

Against Mech IG foot wolves with CML's/Long Fangs/Rune Priests are hilarious, BTW. 12-15 glances/pens a turn against light armor. That's at least 4-5 vehicles wrecked every turn on average, maybe more depending on how you roll your pens.

You should try it before you knock it - it's quite strong.

I run almost exclusively Footslogging List and do great with them. The volume of fire I can put out can outshoot some Guard List. What you really need are three things.
1] Bodies: Lots of Bodies, you can not have enough Bolts Guns to make this work.
2] Lots of High AP Weapons: Plasma Guns and Melta-Guns should be your go to.
3] Fire Support: Long Fangs and I am not talking about Missile Launcher SPAM. You are going to need a mix of Las-Cannons and Heavy Bolters to. A Rune Priest or to for Re-Rolls, a Rifleman Dread or Land Speeder Typhoons would not hurt either.

Then come the hard part, keep playing them until you figure it out. You start running into a Flyer Problem, add an ADL with a Quad Gun. Lots of AV14, make it an Icarus Cannon.

The biggest single obstacle to this approach is Helldrake does as Helldrake pleases. I imagine there are IG builds that will massacre this as well.

If your meta has lots of people who play Helldrakes (or just one guy who plays a lot of helldrakes), then ally in some hard counters.

Guard have vendettas
Vanilla Marines have Storm Talon/Raven
Necrons have scythes and gauss glance out the wazoo
Tau have broadsides and ways to get interceptor

All of the above will crush Helldrakes, and provide good utility against other lists as well.

True, but Every List is not full of Drakes and Guard.
There are some Meta's that Footslogers are difficult to play, but it still can be done.
Long Fangs with the right Psi-Powers can realy do a number on them.
For Gaurd, the same salution or Wolf Scouts.
Also Lone Wolves can make a differance to.

Stormravens point for point, take a bit to kill Helldrakes. Ravens are a very imperfect solution because Vendettas obliterate them.

This is a tournament, so I'd bring Vendettas. It would probably b best to bring IG main with Space Wolf allies, but that's not the intent here, I'm sure.

I took third today with my footslogging self. After this pods are a must...
