Well I've finally got my army on the way to me. An for the most part got the tactics down in my opinion, but I think when it comes to a legion vimstill undicided. Which is bad in a sense because now I have no clue what to paint it in.....any advice or sudgestion would be great. To give you an idea of what I got, I have the dv csm stuff ( cultist helbrute chosen) I have obliterators, khorne berzerkers, a heldrake an standard chaos marines....every I've talked to personally has said black legion but I'm kinda not digging the black khorne berzerkers personally, (idk maybe because I'm still noob to this but a black khorne zerker doesn't sound to appealling) do you think company of misery might be good? Maybe a world eater company that just happens to have regular marines in it? What's your thoughts oh great many of dakka dakka!

Do what you want!

It's a common mistake amongst people starting out that there is a 'right' way to do things.

CSM can often be found in war bands of many disparate elements, and the 40K universe is deliberately constructed to give players the freedom to be creative.

That said, I kinda like the idea of black Bezerkers!

The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense!” Professor Brian Cox

The normal approach for Black Legion Cult Troops (Khorne Berzerkers, Thousand Sons, etc...) would not be to paint them completely black but to paint them in their 'standard' paint scheme and just give them the symbol of the Legion the Eye of Horus, sometimes not even this. This is because of the various pacts the leaders of the Black Legion have signed with various other way smaller warbands to strengthen their might.
So typical Black Legion warband of the 13th Crusade could look like the following: A big group of Black Legion CSMs with Daemon engines, some Khorne Berzerkers from the Skulltakers, multiple units of Night Lords Raptors and a small group of Iron Warriors being Havocs or driving tanks.

For the main paint scheme it's most important that YOU like it. You will spend hours to paint your tiny horned movie villains, the time your buddies have to deal with them, is puny compared to this, so make sure you are happy with it.
If you don't want to make Word Bearers (We're the Mormons of 40k after all, so I have to ask ) you should probably make your own renegade chapter this would leave you the most freedom both in fluff and painting.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

Personally I've found Black Bezerkers look better than the red ones IMO, but I can get similar mileage out of regular CSM appropriately tooled, and they're scoring.

Black Legion also have their own tanks and don't require Iron Warriors to pilot them. Similarly Raptors are not Night Lords exclusive. Think of Black Legion as the Ultramarines of the Traitor faction - almost anything fits just fine.

It was not my intention to say that the Black Legion only consists out of rank-and-file CSMs. I wanted to show that they are the most likely (except for maybe Red Corsairs) to make pacts with smaller more dedicated warbands. As you said the Black Legion can do anything, probably not as good as the dedicated specialists of the relative field tough, but they know this so they compensate with allying in said specialists.

I suggest trying to make your own warband. Make your own paint scheme, your own back story, make it your own.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.
