There is a drinking rhyme that goes:

Beer before liquor, never sicker.
Liquor before beer, all is clear.

True or complete BS? What is your experience?

Mixing drinks never ends well, regardless of the order. I know this from personal work conducted in the field.

Never had a particular problem or success with one over the other, no matter which order you do it in you can always drink enough to be sick.

It's false, it's not what you drink (unless you have allergies of course) it's how much alcohol you consume.

Should I read that as

1. Just drink, Susan. (You're being a girl, Kronk)

or

2. Just drink. My name (Monster Rain) is Susan.

My intent was the former, but the latter makes me feel rather pretty.

Just drink lots of water when having booze (the gakky effects of alcohol are due to dehydration) and you'll be fine.

Depends on the liquor.
The clearer the spirit and fewer congenors in it, the less harsh the effect.

Vodka and beer, no issues apart from a sore head in the morning - which can be prevented with a B-comp/C and lots of water before sleep.

Bourbon and anything and I'm blowing chunks, though.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Tonight is Bourbon followed by cider. We'll see.

If I finish my assignment tonight is beer followed by beer and then since I only have 12 some nice scotch. I never want to think of this assignment again.

My experience is that this is 100% true. As previous posters pointed out, its about quantity, my experience tells me that drinking beer before liquor makes the quantity needed to hate yourself the next morning much much much lower than it would normally be.

Well, to be honest, Bourbon alone will make me ill.

Whereas a good single malt Scotch or a good Irish will not have this effect.

I've gone shot for shot at a Polish Wedding with the best man (I was the Groom's proxy - he can't handle vodka, being a cider-drinking softy) and though the BM awoke the next day with the headache from hell, I didn't.

This is my feeling as well.

That being said, I have only had a single hangover, ever. It was enough to teach me to drink a little water when I'm drinking heavily.

I put a big false. it doesn't matter at all; because for me, it's more like

Beer before liquor never sicker

As a recently graduated Uni student, i'm going to agree with this statement a crate of beer before a night out drinking vodka and gin is guaranteed to end you. If you get a kebab on the way home though you'll be right as rain in the morning though!

Get yourself kinda buzzed on beer, then use poor judgement to drink hard stuff in a bid to greatly increase the alcohol consumption at the end.

vs.

Get yourself buzzed on hard stuff, then use poor judgement to drink beer that you'll most likely just piss out anyway.

Personally Ive never had a problem so far with mixing drinks.

Beer with vodka, tons of different mixed drinks together, beers with b-52s.

Only time Ive ever had a problem was drinking one to many grateful deads (7), and even then I just felt a little sick the next day.

It's definitely false - provably so, in fact. Like much about drinking, it's all down to the individual and not only their base tolerance, but what they usually drink, how much of it they drink and how regularly in terms of building up tolerances.

Case study me, if you like - I'm 28 and spent the first few years of my adult life (18+ being UK) drinking shots, alcopops, funny-looking cocktails... basically anything I could get my hands on except beer since I didn't like the taste.
A few years ago I started drinking beer and ale more but still drink quite a few shots and cocktails too. At first I would get really ill but that would come from drinking lots of beer, even if I had no other drinks, since I wasn't used to them.
Now I can handle mixing both with no problems unless I go overboard.

Note that I'm decidedly not an alcoholic, either - I binge drank like a true student to begin with but now might only drink once a week, and rarely to excess.

Never mix the grape and the grain, the saying goes.
I stick by this as drinking wine then beer turns my stomsch.

My group do have a saying which is scientific fact. 'Burnings getting decimated' any night in which my first drink of the night involves the top shelf.

Surprisingly, I'm not an alcoholic.

Wimps. But yes generally speaking it is true. I have heard of a beer chaser, but not the other way around.

This on the other hand is a shot glass of liquor on top of a shot glass of soda, inside a larger glass that is filled with beer, and then you drink it.

Having a range of different drinks i.e. beer then vodka etc doesnt really have a different effect on me, its when I mix different spirits in the same drink, like I thought it would be an excellent idea to use a bit of lemonade and fill the rest with vodka and jagermeister. Tasted amazing but now I realise it was the worst decision of my life.
