Suppose there is a combat in progress that involves several units on either side. One unit (Unit X) is in base contact with only one enemy unit (Unit Y)... Can the opponent pull models elsewhere in the combat from unsaved wounds (not Unit Y) caused by that unit (Unit X)?

i'd say no, the wounds are directed to a unit chosen by the attacking player, or if thats wrong, which i believe it isnt, then you can only attack (and therefore kill people(?)) from a unit you have a model in base contact with, but thats my opinion
You determine which unit you are attacking before rolling any attacks. If you are allowed to hit more than one unit, you declare you are doing so, and the number of attacks on each, again before rolling to hit.
