Hey all, im wondering if anyone can give me some advice/info on how to make very simple wash's in large quantity's. for a terrain project im doing. preferably something semi affordable that can be done in a straight forward way. im trying to replicate a agrax or camoshade color ideally. but also just interested in learning something new as well! Thx in advance for any helpful info!

There's les' wash recipe under the tutorial forum, and then there's also a lot of other methods too.

Usually they involve something like a flow enhancer or matte medium in addition to regular paint.

I use the 'magic wash' formula which usually works out pretty good; 1 part water to 4 parts pledge one go/pascoe's long life/future floor finish/whatever your equivalent is (quick google shows every country equivalent).

You need a 'clear paint' of some sort. Matte medium is the usual suspect. Theres a few common brands that are available in what would be considered lifetime supplies for mini painting.
Liquitex, Windsor & Newton and Golden all make fine mediums in decent value quantities.
Vallejo do some in small 60ml quantities, and citadel do one in their piddly 12ml portion.
But I would personally favor Liquitex being as they invented water based acrylic paint.. they know whats going on

In addition to this it needs thinning out, Flow aid would be the prefered product I guess, which all the above artisty brands do. Cheap alternative is dish washing soap in water, But very dilute... it will stop the paint adhering properly if you add too much soap.and probably cause issues with any further layers.

For a terrain project, my first question is what materials are you going to apply the wash to? Typically, the answer is not plastic, resin, and metal but cardboard, foamcore, foam insulation board, etc. Just use diluted latex craft paints - I prefer the Americana brand for this purpose available in the US at A.C. Moore. I wouldn't use anything more expensive in the quantities a terrain project usually requires - I'm cheap! For a really BIG job, I would use latex house paint. Yup.

For a large amount, I would also have to suggest the Magic Wash (future floor polish mix).

Mix that up, take a walk down to your local AC Moore, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc, and grab an ink:

Grab the directions for Les' Wash recipe:

and use that as a guideline for how much ink you're going to add to your magic mix. Caution, a little ink goes a long way, keep away from nice clothing and surfaces/materials, and remember to close the bottle properly!
Mix your own custom recipes (write down your recipe!) and go to town. $5 for ink, water is cheap, and Future is another $3? Loads of wash(es) for sickeningly cheap.

^^I second this.

Les' Wash from Awesome Paintjob is really good.

Thx a ton guys, all the helpful info is genuinely appreciated ! the terrain project is large! im going to do a 5 color layered effect that ive been working on and feel i have gotten some really nice results with (but it MUST have 2 layers of wash at certain stepsto really give it depth) on some 2x2 boards for a table surface. so i was kinda stumped with what id do to make that kind of volume of wash lol. im guesstimating it'll take me a solid quart of was to do 2 layers. lol anway thx again for all the handy info and ill tryin post up some pics when im done... gonna be 2 -3 weeks tho
