Hey all just bought a my BF+commander+more fire warrios. Wondering what is best suited for a tau army? Rifles havd better range but carbines have pinning. Which one is best suited to an army that evetually be full of crisis suits a riptide and other.mech units?

I'm a rifle guy to the bitter end. Get your pinning from gun drones or pathfinder squads (if they're close enough for the carbines to hit you're probably better off just unloading into whatever it is rather than messing about with markerlights).

Automatically Appended Next Post:
One more thing, the nova charge on the ion riptide weapon is ordinance, which I believe causes pinning as well. That's always fun to make the shattered remnants of his unit hug the dirt (assuming they don't run away).

As dementedwombat stated, rifles till the end. You can get pinning from other units.

If you shoot one hundred pinning shots at a unit they still only have to take one pinning check. not worth it. go with the rifle always.

Depends on how you will roll them.

In vehicles, going for forward objectives id say carbines,

but anything else rifles.

pinning is pretty much pointless in this age of fearless, though against other tau its not bad.

Thanks for the advice everyone. With 17-0 I am definitely going with rifles. Made my life a lot easier.

I would just like to mention one thing, the old "fish of fury" tactic could roll with carbines, but I'm pretty sure with the changes to rapid fire rifles could do it just as well. Although the idea of using pathfinders with fish to put ion rifles on target appeals to me... might have to try that if I ever fight someone with an actual armor save instead of tyranids and orks all the time.

EDIT: Just noticed rail rifles are rapid fire in this new book... I approve. fish of fury railfinder squad out of nowhere might be a fun time waiter the next time I go against space marines.

You can also bring them out of outflanking, so with a disembark you can move out up to 12" of a board edge and touch most anything.

Also makes me want to try out the pulse accelerator to give my pathfinders basically psybolt stormbolter.

It seems pretty unanimous. Forget pinning, I don't think I've ever forced a pinning check and had it come off successfully. I mean, it sounds neat, but most units with low Ld are fearless or it would be better to get a shot in them than try to get them pinned.

Assuming you can get the right table edge, I think that 6 rail rifle shots and a couple pulse carbines might actually be enough to drive a SM squad off an objective, or at least make the opponent route more forces to an isolated part of the table. It's funny how for me the fast attack slot has gone from "don't even look at it" to "buy fast attack before hq and troops".

It was an amazing thing to see the results of the poll, 27 - 0. Don't think I've seen a poll that dakka can unanimously agree on.

Dang but I read that description wrong. I thought it only let you come in next to the positional relay for some reason. I need to re-read this codex for content. Apparently I didn't get it the first time through.

If you go for a FoF carbines. (and for the double tap extra range, not the pinning. thats just a nice bonus that comes up once a blue moon)
If you do a flankfish, you can go either way. (carbines are better for the maneuver itself, rifles will probably be better after the maneuver is complete)

For any other situation, rifles are just better.

You can outflank in on whatever side, including the enemies board edge, so long as you have a Pos relay 6" of that edge. infiltrating in a stealth suit with one in the enemy back field corner will give you the side and back for outflanking, or in your own backfield corner for whatever side and your own board edge.

So many cool options, not enough force organization slots! I guess I need to give up my "two one suit crisis teams" as two of my elite slots.
