Hey guys,

I am trying to figure out if these guys have to be split out on my list in advance, or if I can allocate them to their Grey Hunter Packs during deployment?

Just trying to decide on some combi-weapon loadouts and not sure if I should hedge myself in or leave the combi distribution more flexible.

Thanks!

You split them at deployment, as per fhe PL rules.

You place them durring Deployment.

Nice! I was worried I would have to spell it out on the list. That really helps with tactical flexibility!

Thanks for the assist

Not according to the FAQ, you split them before deployment. This means that they can be placed with units that have infiltrate and attach the WG and still infiltrate them.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

See above. You still have the flexibility though of not attaching them to other squads. It can be helpful. 'Tis one of the reasons I dislike the habit people have of listing them and their point cost in with the price of a unit.

What one needs remember is that they are split off after your list is made - you don't count them for unit size. Which means 9 GH + WG can't have a second special weapon for being ten men.

Indeed the faq is also very clear in that too.

While they are in fact a separate member of a separate unit in List creation, You generally(80% of the time) build each mnodel in a WG unit for the unit it will attach.

The actual attachment happens just prior to deployment, the final Unit is the total of base unit + attached models for Unit destruction, reserves, and Scoring.

IE: A Grey hunter Squad of 9 men is purchased; at this point they may only have 1 weapon. They purchase a Rhino. Before deployment the Grey Hunter squad is joined by a WG model and held in reserve within the rhino. The rhino Containing the grey hunter squad + the WG Model roll as 1 unit for reserves.

During the game the WG unit that the WG model attached to the Grey Hunter squad is destroyed. The WG unit is destroyed, the active status of the now Grey Hunter model WG-off shoot does not matter.

The WG model within the Grey Hunter unit is the only model left alive; The WG model is still part of the GH unit and Still a "Troops choice" thus a Scoring unit and may still Hold Objectives.

I'd disagree that you build the WG model for the unit it will be attached to, though that's a topic for a different forum.

To clarify what Kommissar Kel said (because it confused me the first time through):

If you split off a Wolf Guard model to act as a Pack Leader for another unit, it counts fully as a model of that unit and ceases to count as a model of the Wolf Guard pack. You split off the Wolf Guard after you've made your Army List, but before any models have been Deployed. This does mean that you could have selected a Wolf Guard Pack and have no Wolf Guard to deploy as a unit, as you've split them all off. Your opponent does not get a kill point for this in case you are wondering.

The only real restrictions with the Pack Leader rule by the way is that you can't lead Skyclaws (kept hoping that was an oversight but they've never fixed it), can't join TDA/Bikes/Jump Pack models to Wolf Scouts, and your Wolf Scouts can't Operate Behind Enemy Lines if they have one assigned to them. It can be fun to add an Assault Cannon or Arjac to a Grey Hunter squad sometimes.
