Hi, this my first forum so sorry if i make a mistake.
I'm starting imperial guard and have created a small 800 point list to start playing with,
and (eventually) add to to build a proper army. So can some veterans have a look
and give me some basic pointers? By the way this list is geared towards killing Space Marines. So here:

15] Power Fist
30] Medipack
15] Regimental Standard
10] Heavy Bolter Team

Total: 120

are you looking to specifically target marines, or are they just heavy in your meta (area)

ok I would lose all the upgrades here except (maybe) the standard. Take advantage of BS4 and take special weapons or a lascannon/autocannon. These guys also definitely need a chimera for protection and target saturation.

Total: 120
TROOPS:

10X Veterans Squad

15] Power Fist
5] Flamer
20] 2 Meltaguns
I would lose the flames and power fist, then take another meltagun and probably an autocannon or lascannon. Are these guys in a chimera? You should list DT with the unit you bought them for.
10X Veteran Squad

15] Power Fist
5] Flamer

same as above, but consider taking 3x plasma guns to help with MEQ and TEQ
Total: 220

85] Stormtrooper Squad

10] Meltagun

Stormtroopers can work, but not like this. Personally I never use them, and you'd be better dropping them for another unit of vets, but if you really want them then lose the power fists and take two special weapons.
Total:230
FAST ATTACK:

110] 2 Armoured Sentinels
10] 2 Autocannons

Total:120
Sentinels are BAD. Lose 10pts somewhere else and swap these out for a vendetta. You'll get more, better guns, and more survivability.
DEDICATED TRANSPORTS:

55] Chimera
0 ]Multi-laser
0 ]Heavy Bolter

no problems here

Not bad for a first attempt though. well done

Note to the reader: my username is not arrogance. No, my name is taken from the most excellent of commanders: Lord Castellan Creed, of the Imperial Guar- I mean Astra Militarum - who has a special rule known only as "Tactical Genius"... Although nowhere near as awesome as before, it now allows some cool stuff for the Guar- Astra Militarum - player. FEAR ME AND MY TWO WARLORD TRAITS.

1. Remove the point costs of individual items. Its against the forum's rules. Just put in the total cost of the unit.

2. Medipack's are a bad choice. They are just too expensive for what they provide to such a small and (still) fragile unit.

3. Likewise, I'd stick with Power Axes over Power Fists. S6 is nice, but you aren't causing Instant Death to much of anything so it makes the Power Fist less worthwhile. You're better off just sticking with the S4 AP2 Power Axe.

4. Take Heavy Flamers on the Chimeras. Its free and very much worth it. Also, you'll want to do that with other Chimera-based options like the Manticore. Heavy Flamers can do a lot of damage to a lot of different units and will make your enemy very nervous about approaching.

5. I wouldn't bother with a Power Weapon on the Storm Troopers since they are generally considered "suicide" units.

So you can free up an easy 55 points just dropping the Power Fists to Power Weapons (Axes are preferred) and the Medipack. I'd consider doubling up on the Meltaguns in the Storm Trooper Squads and bumping the Flamers up to Meltaguns on the Veterans (that BS 4 is valuable in your Codex, don't waste it on a Flamer! That's what the BS 3 Guardsmen are for.) leaving you 15 points left over. May as well bump up that Heavy Bolter in the CCS to a Lascannon!

To be blunt your list lacks dakka, other than MG's your going to shoot infantry with lasguns (flashlights). You should
scrap the stormtroopers and invest in some Infantry Squads with PCS's because in a 800 point game there really
isn't a heavy threat of armor. Speaking of Infantry chimera's are highly recommended you need the mobility with IG

Sentinals with autocannons.....if you want autocannons place them in some Infantry or Veteran Squads its a waste
if you put them on sentinels there not that robust.
