Hey guys
i would love some commentary on drone controllers and how they function.
Do you need to maintain unit cohesion for drones to benefit from a drone controller?

Drone controler affects drones in the bearer's unit. You can't voluntarily break squad coherency. So yeah you do.

Your question seems to imply that you think a model with Drone Controller can affect drones that are in a different unit from him. He cannot.
And, as already mentioned, since units must maintain coherency at all times (and try to reform when out of coherency), then this question doesn't really make sense. Could you rephrase what you're asking?

He might be wondering if the drones have to be within 2" of the controller to benefit, in which case the answer is no. They just have to be in the same unit.

A model with a drone controller can buy drones for the unit (shield, missile, gun, marker, etc...) but if he is killed, the drones are removed. They operate within the unit and are jet pack infantry.
Hope this helps

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

It doesn't because you're wrong. You don't need a Drone Controller to buy drones, and the drones aren't removed if the owning model is killed. There's a whole page of rules on how to handle the drones in various circumstances, and they're quite clear.

Just want to reiterate with Chrysis, this is quite wrong. Drones are NOT killed if the drone controller is killed. They are completely non-reliant on each other. Page 33 of the codex is crystal clear on this.
I'm not sure if migs6357 was saying it, but in addition you don't need a drone controller to buy drones. Also, Drone Controllers do not work with missile drones, and only Broadsides can take missile drones (see latest FAQ).

Yeah you reeeeeeaaaallly should get the codex before you proclaim that you know stuff... Not a good plan - usually results in ridicule and/or slander.

Note to the reader: my username is not arrogance. No, my name is taken from the most excellent of commanders: Lord Castellan Creed, of the Imperial Guar- I mean Astra Militarum - who has a special rule known only as "Tactical Genius"... Although nowhere near as awesome as before, it now allows some cool stuff for the Guar- Astra Militarum - player. FEAR ME AND MY TWO WARLORD TRAITS. |
