You mention the wave serpent being able to field two shuriken cannons and a starcannon, but the starcannon is an exchange upgrade, not in addition to its normal weapons.

Seconded on the Wave Serpent comment.

Also Jetbikes can't run, so battle focus is pointless on the windrider squads.

For the hemlock fighter, the heavy D-scythe is small blast not large.

Note of interest the striking scorpion exarch can take 'crushing blow' which combined with scorpions claw, makes him Str7/8 (not sure if the +1 strength is to his basic statline or applied after) Ap2 at I6.

Otherwise nice, report, good job on getting it out so quickly.

Thanks guys,

edited to represent corrections!

I still think the wave serpent is a very strong option, but like most AV12 you need lots of them to make it work and they're not cheap!

Think you might have to revaluate Eldrad. Sure in the vacuum of the new codex he seems over priced, but like you said other Codexs would kill to get him, and they can! With allies, which I see many armies taking him and a unit of jet bikes.

Games Workshop: Ruining Chaos Space Marines since 2007

First they raised prices on the Eldar, and I did not speak out because I did not play Eldar.

Then, they raised prices on the Orks, and I did not speak out because I did not play Orks.

Then, they raised prices on the Nids, and I did not speak out because I did not play Nids.

Then, they raised prices on the Marines, and there was nobody to speak out for me.

I would also mention that they easily have the fire power to drop a 2 wound fortification in the first shooting phase, giving the flier more options

They have kept stealth, move through cover and infiltrate and gained battle focus. It’s a bit useless for them as heavy weapons prevent you firing and running.

6th Edition allows you to move and snap fire Heavy weapons.

With Eldrad in the last 'dex if you wanted a super upgraded farseer with all the trimmings he was only 20 or so points less than Eldrad and Eldrad did so much more. Now with Farseers being over 100pts less even if you were allying a psyker in, you'd probably take the Farseer. If your taking bikes you can give one to your farseer for only 15pts which Eldrad can't have. The difference between 3 and 4 is so small and his staff is quite nice but he has to take runes of ward/witnessing which are poor so your paying 30 pts for them which you'd never take with a normal seer. Compared to a lvl 2 librarian etc. Eldrads pretty strong but if you were to be allying eldar in I'd always just ally in a Seer. The only exception I can think of is if you were running some kind of deathstar which needed to be able to get invisibility, prescience and a load of other spells off as well. Then eldrad can make use of casting invisibility cheaply etc. but I don't think the differences are that high.

While you can move and snap fire with sniper rifles, my point was that the battle focus rule prevents you from running and firing heavy weapons in the same turn with battle focus (unless your relentless) so some units can do it... like War Walkers .

Thanks for posting this review up so quickly.

My friend just showed me his Codex, I was very interested.

You'll probably further refine it, but it's very useful now too.

I liked your grouping things that belonged together.

It makes much more sense, especially for the Eldar.

When I was reading, the groups kept it much more focused.

I'm reading the guide precisely because I don't know Eldar.

So your grouping really helps with my understanding.

I'll check back time to time. Eldar might be my 2nd army.

I guess it's a generic rule that they gave to all non wraith constructs, they can use it for their pistols if you need to move them. But it's just not particularly useful. As your esteemed fellow critic pointed out above Jetbikes cannot use it either :(

Kommissar Waaaghrick

Thankyou for your kind words, It became apparant as I was writing it that I couldn't talk about the phoenix lords without talking about the aspect warriors because they shared so much. So I decided to hell with the standard HQ, Troops, Elite format and I just grouped them according to sense!

I stole the idea from the Blood Angel codex which as I say has double page spreads of Mephiston next to Librarian, Captain Tycho next to Captain etc. But no that would have made FAAAAAAAAAAAAR too much sense for the eldar codex ^^

Farseer/Autach: If you have the points to spare, mixing the sniper remnant with a jetbike could be fun. Haven't seen if it could fit in my lists, but a Relentless sniper that can JSJ and is AP3 even without a rend? Wee.

Rangers: Ranger Long Rifle lost the double dipping on armour penetration. You're no longer AP1 for 6 to hit. That's the main reason for the point decrease. Understandable, but sad because it loses synergy with Snap Shots.

Asurmen: I think I disagree here, he got much better. He hits AP2 at initiative. Soulrazor may not be as often as generic Instant Death, but notice the wording - it's not Instant Death so Eternal Warrior isn't immune to it. He's also the only PL with an invuln. Asurmen is a CC beast - just stick him in a CC unit (say, the newly available Asurmen/Striking Scorpion combo?)

Dire Avengers: Note Exarch dual catapults is now Twin-Linked, meaning the shimmershield in comparison improved even more.

Jetbike Guardians: Do a +/- comparison on these versus tac marines, and you'll see that maybe larger squad starting on the board isn't a bad idea now. Maybe instead my common 2x3 last codex, I'll go 1x3 and 1x9+Warlock or so. Jetbikes being much easier for Farseers/Autarchs to grab, they could also join that unit as well.

Support Battery: Note they're Support Weapon, not Heavy Weapon Platform, so they're not Relentless.

War Walkers: Note they gained both Open-Topped (boo) and a 5+ invuln (yay).

Great article, some really good points and concepts I hadn't considered.

Can you check on the Support Battery having relentless? I see the relentless rule under the heavy weapon platforms entry but think the support weapon is a different type. Thanks

Sadly I'm wrong: the heavy weapons in a guardian squad are relentless but the artillery in Heavy support are not, good catch!

I wrote the entire thing in a night!! Fortunately I have the benefit of the online community to catch my mistakes (that's an easy one to make though ^^)

And yeah, I was trying to think abstractly how could this unit be used tactically! From what I can see from other reviews I am the only person calling for a unit of swooping hawks in every household!

Yes, would have been very interesting. On the subject of heavy weapons & battle focus, could star engines be useful for walkers? I was wondering if it is possible to equip just one, in a unit, to give the leading model more chance, to get a run roll high enough, to get back into cover. Perhaps of limited use though...

Good article and as has been said kudos on getting it out so quickly after the books release.

Just out of curiosity what weapons can Autarchs take? (besides the relics), I was sad to hear they can't take scorpion claws but are there any new options they didn't have previously?

From what I can see they have identical gear selection to the previous book, including their starting equipment. However, there has been a major price change to most of the gear with wings/jetbike/warp jump generator considerably cheaper, the weapons have changed depending on the weapon with some cheaper some more expensive. I won't post points for obs reasons but will say that the only piece of gear more expensive than 15pts is the reaper (as said in review).

He can take specialist wargear (relic) which is new which gives him access to an ap3 sniper rifle ^^

P.S thanks again, I try and get my review out as fast as possible to hit the market before 3++ and the other blogs get theirs up

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh on the topic of running war walkers, star engines give an extra 3 inches to the run move so its pretty nifty, with fleet of foot giving rerolls - do you need it? Not really and its more than 10 points. That said your right it can be given to just one as they don't need to be armed identically.

If your playing JSJ I'd move your war walkers to form a vertical line outside the cover, so they all need 3 inches or so to get out of line of sight. If you were doing it horizontally you'd need a lot higher for the front model its true. That said not all cover will accommodate this
