Currently I´m starting to get a decent IG Army going and I´d like to go mech.
Right now i have 2 Chimeras for my Troops and a Leman Russ Demolisher/Executioner/Punisher, a CCS with 4x Plasma and 2 Vet Squads with Melta & a Vendetta.
My possible next purchases are:
- a Cadian Battleforce for a blob to hold my home objective and deliver some long range lascannon fire
- 2 LRBT Boxes for some more awesome AV14 tanks
- 2 Basilisks
-2 Hellhounds

What would you take? Or are there better ideas for a strong IG army? To be honest I would like to pass on further vendettas.

Probably another chimera for the CCS, or perhaps more mechvets. Otherwise, I'd go for the tanks.

As above, another chimera and two more tanks.

More chimeras. They die quicker now than they use to so spamming them should let you have atleast one or two to push forwards to claim objectives late game. Kind of depends on your meta as well. Any thing that works against flyers will be just as good or better vs AV12

Well, they do and they don't. They lost on the inclusion of hull points, but they gained in the vehicle damage table, and only needing 25% to get a cover save now, and not being able to be stun-locked, so they'd be able to run for cover more easily after their first penetrating hit, and they can now move flat-out, which means they can get to cover more easily. In any case, it's not a straight loss in durability.

In any case, the best answer to chimeras dying too fast in 6th edition seems to be to buy more things that can kill the things that can kill chimeras, rather than buying more chimeras.

Or to put your troops in Vendettas instead.

The best way to prevent chimeras dying is not to take them"?

But that means if you take vendettas instead of chimeras, then the vendettas will be more vulnerable than the chimeras, which are invincible because you're not taking them.

In that case, the best way to protect vendettas is to take chimeras instead.

Woah...

A foot massage wouldn't hurt either.

Those are all good choices. I would avoid buying both leman russes and basilisks as that would give you more than 3 heavy support vehicles - it is better to get more troops and chimeras first, before taking so much heavy support that they have to deploy in squadrons.

Been thinking this ever since I joined Dakka :L

Note to the reader: my username is not arrogance. No, my name is taken from the most excellent of commanders: Lord Castellan Creed, of the Imperial Guar- I mean Astra Militarum - who has a special rule known only as "Tactical Genius"... Although nowhere near as awesome as before, it now allows some cool stuff for the Guar- Astra Militarum - player. FEAR ME AND MY TWO WARLORD TRAITS.

I would go for the chimera for the hq then more melta or plasma vets in chimeras. Once you have about 4 vet squads in chimeras maybe expand on the heavies after that i guess? Troops are very important this edition with most games being scoring so 4-6 troops is pretty solid base.

So are MechVets better then a smallish blob (1pcs+2 platoons with flamers+lascannons) for holding home objectives? I somehow have the feeling that all those Vets in Chimeras are almost no threat to enemys on the other table side.

You can't really say one is better than the other as they both do very different things. The mech Vets can put out a lot of fire power at med-short range for very few points and the platoons are a good source of massed bodies and Heavy Weapons.

But two BS 3 LCs aren't going to be a threat either. If you're going to play Chimera spam you need Chimera spam, anything that isn't a vehicle is just killing your target saturation.

Vets in chimeras don't have to be a threat to whatever's on the other side of the table, they just have to be able to stop whatever it is that's racing towards your big guns.

Nice, I´ve never thought about them like this.
What kind of LRBT would complement this gameplan?

And how terrible are Vets with grenade launchers? They have a pretty high strength and the AP is not that bad if i play against non-MEQ.

Well, they're slightly less terrible than just throwing the unit in the garbage. There's no point in taking GLs when you can take melta or plasma for just a few more points.
