Hello, Dakkadakkaians.

A question if I may. I was led to believe that the assassins of the Officio Assassinorum had been withdrawn. I can't find the model on GW or FW's website, and the IG Codex does not list them.

Imagine my surpise then, when I see an assassin of the Officio Assassinorum in the most recent rule book, on page 390: The Battle of Eagle Gate.

What the hell? Is the assassin still a model, or is the model is the rule book just for show? If so, that's just a tease. I want an assassin for my IG army.

I'm pretty sure they are listed under Grey Knights, as they are the only army that can take them now. I hope that GW gets around to doing some sort of Allies supplement that allows all Imperial armies take assassins, but for now, you have to ally GK in to get access to them.

Oh, well that explains that. I was lead to believe the assassins were at one point an IG unit. (sigh), back to throwing wave after wave of men at the enemy, then.

There are actually 4 kinds of Assassins, and all are Elite choices for GK armies.

I don't believe they were ever in the IG codex, but when they were in the Daemon Hunter codex you could take an Inquisitor, some ISTs, and an Assassin as an Ally for your IG army. It was pretty standard practice to get an unlimited range Psychic Hood for your IG army, along with an Assassin and another unit of Storm Troopers.

There was a mini-dex back in 3rd Ed free with an issue of WD. Only had the four assassins and their fluff. They were legal with any imperial army.

There are also Death Company Assassins in both GK and Sisters codices. So, that's... 5 Assassins. Woop.

Those aren't Officio Assassinorum Assassins though. Occasionally they get recruited by the Officio but they are a separate group.

Death Cults are religious cults fanatically devoted to the Emperor.

Not sure I understand this. What are you considering "Officia Assassinorum Assassins" then?

There are actually seven known temples of assassins, but Grey Templar is correct regarding the Death Cultists. He's also right that only four types of temple assassins are playable in 40K.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

Eversor, Vindicare, Callidus, and Culexus are the 4 assassins represented with rules currently that are Officio Assasinorum.

Some that don't have rules are Venenum, Vanus, and Maerorus.

I don't know if we're thinking of the same one... but there was a Codex:Assassins release for 2nd Ed. Memory tells me it was £4, the thing was tidgy. This was back when armies didn't have the FOC, but instead had percentage allowances like Fantasy does, one of which was for Allies. So that was the only time (possibly outside of the one you mention) you could take Assassins in Guard without any other allied units.

2nd ed, allies were a lot more flexible.

3rd ed also had an assassins codex - any imperial army could take one. Book even had a mission.

The 2nd ed codex was the first Assassins codex. They updated it to 3rd edition and re-released it packaged with White Dwarf one month.

Then Codex Daemonhunters came along and introduced the requirement to field an Inquisitor to also have an Assassin (and inadvertantly, an Inquisitor Lord and retinue in order to have an Assassin in an Allied force). In true GW style, they initially said that you could still use Assassins from Codex: Assassins instead of using the DH rules if you wished... and then 2 weeks later changed their minds and officially rendered Codex: Assassins obsolete.

Vindicare.
Culexus.
Callidus.
Eversor.
Venenum.
Vanus.

Any Assassin class that is named after the temple by which he/she is trained is an Assassin of the Officio Assassinorum. Death Cults may be, but are not always, parts of these six temples.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Back in 2nd ed any Imperium force could take assassins, or any other Imperium force, as support which could make up 25% of your total force. They didn't have the force chart that is used now. But back then an eversor (think it was actually named evisitor, for eviscerate) cost about 265 points, and was worth it.

They were still called Eversors in 2nd edition.
