I'm looking at starting a Space Wolves army, i like the whole viking style of them, and need a few pointers, particularly tactics and models to invest in. I'm thinking of starting with a 1000 point army and working from there. I already have some space marine models, they are as follows two sets of assault on black reach marines, terminators, captain and dreadnought ( got them as I play orks) and I was lucky to get for cheap one set of dark vengeance space marine models from a friend ( he plays chaos). By the looks it seems like I have a good start. But don't know where to actually begin with a space wolves army and how I may be able to model them like a space wolf army?

Hi there,

If you buy a Wolf Pack box, you'll have 10 space wolf marines and enough bits to wolf up all your other marines on top.

Grey Hunters are your go to choice for most games, so you need lots of normal marine models, so you are in luck!

For 1000 points, you will want about 3 Grey Hunter squads minimum, so around 30 marines.

Terminators are a good choice to use as Wolf Guard Pack Leaders and can really add to your troops survivability.

Dreadnoughts are not ideal in 6th, however you can try them out if you already have the models.

Go for Drop Pods as Space Wolves do them better than most.

Start with that, it should easily make 1000 points from that and then you can add what you feel you need to supplement them.

Its better to burn out than to fade away

If you like the viking feel, I would recommend Blood claws. They are savage maulers who excel at close combat. Also the wulfen are savage wolves given in to their animal instinct. They are pretty cool al well.

The blood claws are cheap and fun. I would play them for fun and not comp games.

The Space Wolf Pack box set comes with a ton of bits you can use to help convert the models. I'd start there.

I also strongly recommend avoiding Blood Claws. They aren't any cheaper than Grey Hunters and come with a host of drawbacks and not enough pluses. And if you are more into fluff than competitive play, you'd have mostly Grey Hunters in a Great Company anyways. Digriz is fairly spot on in his advice, though I would add that Drop Pods, Rhinos, and foot based Grey Hunters are all useful. Though I do run a lot of Drop Pods myself

I'm a rhino man myself but as usual cowmonaut is bang on, and all i'll say is if you read any SW threads they all say that rune priests, grey hunters and long fangs are the best, with good reason, i can't rate them enough, but i also really like wolf scouts and thunderwolf cavalry look awesome it's a sin not to use them, but SW are always fun, strong, and look a amazing so you can't really go wrong

Look at the Space Wolf Battleforce Box Set.
1-3 of those and 0-2 Space Marine Battleforces will st you up nicely.

Thank you much appreciated everyone. Now all that needs to be done is to get drop pods from eBay, haha. I was asking looking at the special characters for space wolves, after I've reached my 1000point goal who should I go for without broking the bank pointwise? And as far as an HQ which one is best suited to be a good support for my army. Wolf lord, rune priest, wolfguard battle leader. And whet are some recommended load outs for my squads? I only ask cause I don't want to do a whole lot of magnetization with my models. Thanks again.

Good named hq: logan and njal are both cool.
Rune priests are the go-to support hq. Prescience is fantastic as are some of the sw powers like jaws of the world wolf and living lightning.
A good grey hunter load out would consist of 7-10 gh with 1 melta gun or 1 plasma gun, 2 of each (never mix weapons) if the squad numbers 10. Throw in a wolf banner and maybe even a guy with Mark of the Wolven. The awesome thing about gh is that they come with bolt pistol, boltor, and ccw. So you can model them with any of those. I recommend modeling some with out the boltor in case you want to try blood claws.

For real. I picked up several for only 10-15 USD back in 5E.

You should check out this guy's blog if you haven't already:

http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.com/

Most of the articles were written for 5th edition, but even so they are really helpful. There is a list of tactics articles on the right column of the page for each unit. As for HQ, I would go for the Rune Priest, but look through the articles of the other HQs and units and see if any others sound like something you'd like.

Eh, I'd add that the guy gives bad advice most of the time since he came back. Early on in 5E he was pretty solid but he went on hiatus for a while and when the blog came back it's hence started having some questionable articles.

If you are starting with 0 knowledge, it wouldn't be too bad I suppose but some of the "conclusions" he comes to are highly questionable and he does have just Wrong advice sometimes.
