Based on your personal observation, what are the most common points levels for non-competitive (i.e., mostly friendly) play?

Sorry if this is a bad poll, I don't have the polls codex. Poll options space out over 2000 points because I don't want to have too long of a list of options.

The root of my question is to find out what level I should shoot for when charting out my nascent Imperial Guard army, so that I know roughly how much it'll cost and how long it'll take me to get there. Thanks!

I picked 1250-1750 as that's the normal scope of armies around here. 1500 is relatively balanced for all armies. Not too many models, doesn't take too long and is still a hard-fought game.

My group always does 2K. It gives you the ability to use most of the options in your codex.

I only really do 1k becuase me and my friends are still fairly new, although i think getting up to 1500 would be alot of fun.

Why do so many people do 1850? it feels like a very odd number to me?

My gaming group usually does 1,850 points. They are decent sized games that don't take too long to play.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Mainly 2500 or 2000 for my group but we also play smaller games depending on the mood we are in.

we tend to be all over the place. Some 500, 750, 1000 games if we are short on time. 1250 or 1500 games if its kinda pre planned. 1850 and 2000 for "hey two saturdays from now at 2pm at my place we should have a game!".

We also use 1850 as a highish points game were we don't want double FOC, because people in my area started getting annoyed at the whole 1999+1 thing. There were some good points made on both sides and we all agreed 1850 for one, and if it hits 2k or more you can go ahead and dual FOC.

That being said, about 50% of my games are 1500, 25% 1850, and the rest are made up randomly of 500, 700, 100, 1250, 2000, 2000+. For some reason we don't ever really play 1750, which seems to be popular in some places.

1000 pts gets you a decent sized battle with room for units from each of the FOC slots.

Usually I build lists for 1750 though as it allows for you to bring 80% of the units you want while leaving the table uncluttered and keeping the game to a reasonable length of time.

At 2k or above I feel as though turns begin to drag on, movement is hindered by your own units cluttering things up and armies are jam packed with all the goodies your codex has to offer (I find it fun when list building involves making the tough choices of what to fit in).

1500 is the default in my experience. 1750 is the second most common.

1250-1750 is a pretty odd range. I'd say the most common range for competitive play is 1500-1850. its also in the butter zone of 40k balance, which IMO extends from 1750 to 2500 in terms of best gameplay. Assuming proper rule usage and terrain densities.

I personally like 1850 and 2000 points specifically.

I've played games of over 9000 pts per person, its fun. But not common.

If I'm honest, the best games I've played (fun wise, not victory wise necessarily), have all been big games. It lasts all night sure, but things get more interesting and stay fun longer.

The only answer I can give is "it depends". Our entire group likes to play team or free for all games. We usually do either 3 way free for all at 1500 pts an army or 2 vs 2 at 1000 pts an army.

I think the biggest battle I've ever personally done was 3 vs 3 at 1500 pts an army. The standard 6x4 table was not a happy place for that arrangement (wall to wall troops in the deployment zone).

I picked 1000ish fore friendly games. This is because when I play at home I like to play 750-1000 point games but at the FLGS the most common game is 1500 but sometime 750 and sometimes 1000 so it all depends but I like 1000 points.

You have to be careful what you spend your points on to make sure your getting what you payed for points wise.

I've been playing 1,000 point games with my mom for quite a while. We used to play 1,500 point games, but we knocked it down to 750 when we moved the gaming table out of the cool basement and into the annoyingly warm and cramped spare bedroom, to make the games go faster, but they still took a few nights to play (we only played for an hour or two at a time).

We bumped it up to 1,000 points because after the minimum requirements there just wasn't a lot of points left for the more savory unit choices.

The reason it takes us so long to play is because my memory is very bad for specific phrasing, and her memory is so bad in general that she's been tested for Alzheimer's (negative, by the way), so we're looking up rules a lot of the time. There's no third party who knows the rules really well to correct us if we play things wrong, and my mom learns the rules from me, so, yeah. Also, the family pets often come into the room and sprawl out on the little amount of floorspace there is, or on the table in the case of our cats, and my mom just HAS to fawn over them constantly, which is at the least distracting because she's not paying attention (and she does it often enough that I sometimes get frustrated enough to just go and do my own rolls without her watching. I'm honest about it, though; I don't fudge the dice rolls).

And the reason we moved the gaming table up to that bedroom from the basement is because my younger brother likes to host parties in the basement for his friends, and they treated my nicely painted and flocked Realm of Battle board with models on it as just another table, so they put laptops and drinks on it and moved models around.

Well I was gonna say 800, but there's no option for it!

My gaming group recently has played like this:
Bring 3 800 point lists that vary.
You and your opponent roll D3 to dictate which list.

The point limit will climb as our newer players' armies grow.

I actually like this idea because then you never know who your units will be exactly and adds a bit of fun.

I do think that it might be a bit annoying if you didn't get the list you wanted for that particular day tho

The typical points level at the Games Workshop I play at is 1500, though, 2000 isn't uncommon.

Nobody wants to play against my pair of Mortis Contemptors, so I usually play 1500. :(
