From reading several of the HH books recently, one Space Marine formation stood out to me as being an interesting addition to 40k, especially if using the forge world heresy era ruleset (I have not read the FW rules yet, so this will be based of "standard" 40k rules). Several books describe legionaries using large ceremite "boarding shields" in a sort of phalanx formation to resist incoming fire and repel assaults. Any points costings are mainly arbitrary to give an example.
The thinking behind this unit (if there is any other than fluff) is to be a unit which has little offensive capability, but can survive a good deal of punishment. The unit however is very slow to move and cannot take advantage of transports easily. Their role therefore is to act as a "screen" for your more vulnerable units, or to sit them on top of objectives.

Legionary Defender Squad, Troops (4 Space Marines, 1 SM Sergeant) 130pts
Space Marine WS4 BS4 S4 T4 W1 I4 A1 Ld8 Sv2+
Space Marine Sergeant WS4 BS4 S4 T4 W1 I4 A2 Ld9 Sv2+

Wargear:
-Power Armour
-Boltgun
-Bolt Pistol
-Frag Grenades
-Krak Grenades
-Boarding Shield

Special Rules:
-ATSKNF
-Combat Squads
-Legion/Chapter Tactics
-Shield Wall
-Bulky
-Slow and Purposeful

-May Take up to 5 additional Marines 25pts each
-Sergeant may select additional armoury options (melta bombs, power weapons ect)
-For every 5 marines in the squad, one marine may replace his bolter with either a flamer, melta or plasma gun.
-Every marine may replace his bolter with an additional close combat weapon for no extra cost.

Boarding Shield: This thick ceremite shield allows marines to receive a much higher degree of protection than his normal power armour, especially from ranged attacks, at the cost of mobility.
Improves armour save by +1 (to a maximum of 2+, included in profile) and confers a 5+ cover save. Models equipped with the shield have the Slow and Purposeful USR (shown in profile) and may not perform sweeping advances. Models equipped with the shield count as bulky for the purposes of boarding transports. Models equipped with the shield cannot gain the +1 to armour save when shot by template weapons.

Shield Wall: Defender squads are famed for their ability to stand steadfast against even the most determined assaults by the most ferocious of foes.
Units declaring an assault against a defender squad never gain the +1 attack bonus for charging. In addition any unit charging the defender squad can never take advantage of USRs or other special rules improving the stats of the unit when it is launching an assault (Furious Charge, Hammer of Wrath, Rage ect).

And heaven forbid if the Marine would also happen to have an intimidating looking, vertical scar. Then you're surly boned. Those guys are the worst. Not a chance I'd say.

There is a heresy era squad called boarding marines that uses boarding shields that give them a 5++ from ranged attacks and a 6++ in CC. These marines also use hardened armour which give them a re-roll for failed armour saves against blasts. If you want a 40k version check out the IA badab war part 2 were you can use tactical marines with boarding shields that give them re-rolls for armour saves, prevent them from riding in rhinos and razorbacks and only works against ranged attacks for +50 points
