I've been a longtime dakka reader but never once have I been a member of a forum, let alone posting a topic. Figured I'd give it a shot for once...
The last time I played 40k was in 4th ed, so I have no experience in 5th or 6th ed. I've read the 6th ed rules twice now.
I've recently restarted my Speed Freaks army and will be using a Big Mek with KFF. I'm reading the Ork Takktika that was written in 5th ed in regards to the Big Mek KFF in which it states that he will give a 4+ cover to vehicles.
In the most recent Ork FAQ for 6th ed ver 1.4 it states this: "Page 34 – Mekboyz, Kustom Force Field. Change the second sentence to read “A kustom force field gives all units within 6" of the Mek a cover save of 5+. Friendly vehicles within 6" are counted as being obscured and have a 5+ cover save”. Note the separation of terms "obscured" and "5+ cover save".
In the 6th ed rulebook on pgs 74-75 are the rules for Vehicles and Cover - Obscured targets, stating an obscured vehicle counts as 5+ cover in open terrain. It then goes into detail about front armor being hidden from view granting +1 cover for shots originating from the front.
My understanding of these rules tell me that in the open a trukk/battlewagon within range of the Big Mek KFF will receive a 5+ cover save, since it counts as obscured but does not receive the +1 cover for having the front being hidden from view. My confusion begins with the FAQ stating that they have obscurity AND a 5+ cover save.
My questions: How did the KFF give a 4+ cover in 5th edition? Was it an FAQ or rule in 5th in regards to KFF that is different than the one is 6th? Am I interpreting the rules wrong and the KFF still gives a 4+ cover in the open (meaning that the FAQ specified that it has a 5+ as well as obscure +1)?
Apologies in advance if I'm posting an already answered topic. I've been searching for a while and couldn't find a previous post. Thanks in advance!
In 5th ed the standard cover Save was a 4+. 6th ed reduced that to 5+.
The FAQ just brings the KFF into line with 6th edition rules.
Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

Thanks, I figured as much. In the FAQ I saw the question stating it was a 5+ cover save, but I was hoping for the better . Having two types of obscurity (one with front armor hidden) without name differentials got me confused.
