I noticed that Wargames Factory posted this on facebook about an hour ago:

"The Russians are coming! Sneak peek of our 28mm WWII Russians- to be released very soon."

Ugh, they've got the same stiff poses the Germans do. No amount of awesome bits can save them from that in my opinion.

That said, that appears to be a female sniper, which is pretty cool.

Warlord's Russian kit will probably beat this out. It's more expensive, but the jump in quality is immense and you still get a good amount of models for the money.

Ugh, more of that big thumbs up generic left hand support pose (like the zombie survivor State Police officer).
Still, it's going to be a good price for a platoon of russians.

I'm of two minds for figs like these. On the one hand, it's a great deal, most shortcomings can probably be easily modded away, and on the tabletop they're not going to be that visible anyway. Also, being plastics, you get the near infinite pose variety.

Still, when the figs theme selves arent' great, I kind of feel that I'd rather buy affordable metal models for 2 bucks each than less-than-great plastics for 1 buck each.

Here's a couple of Black Tree Design (formerly Harlequin) Russian NKVD figs I painted up, for a post apoc campaign oddly enough(hence the non-historical colors and added backpacks). http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2012/12/fully-painted-void-junkers-and-neo.html
Very un-fancy diped paint job, but it gets the point across.

Affordable lines like BTD aren't better detailed than WGF but I like the chunky metal look and the mono-poses mean that the unity of design is there. No odd thumbs, hands that don't wrap around what they are holding or poses that don't quite work.

They are perfectly adequate miniatures. While they might look "stiff" is probably because humans don't have the most flexible of spines as far as mammals go and these are miniatures of humans.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

To be fair the stiffness or posture issues of plastic miniatures are inevitable. When a human leans or walks, or raises his arm, it affects the whole stance of the individual, not just that part. The torso may flex, another body part may rebalance, etc.

In a mono-pose sculpt this will be reflected by any halfway decent sculptor as they attempt to translate an entire pose into miniature.

Multipart poseable models will always have some shortcomings when it comes to posture and pose because they only have a few points of articulation. It's just not possible to have more realistic posing and unity of sculpt when you are designing figures that need to be able to adopt many different poses.

Still, I imagine that if the figures above were made by Perry they wouldn;t have as many the issues.

And they would be just as affordable.

I'm sticking with the Warlord variants, might be a tad more expensive, but they look better and come forty per box.
