So today I spent a bit of the afternoon making a start on stripping down a bunch of 40k orks that have been sat in a drawer for quite some time with a paint job I'm not keen on.

(also stripped some Eldar and My Last Chancers for use as some side projects to break up the green!)

Still got a fair amount of stripping and breaking down the figures to go, I'm not actually sure whats in there at this point... its all infantry except the 3 deff kopta's... so lotsa Boyz

I would like to do something a little different with them from the standard figures this time around. Maybe freebooter conversions or anything else that might be a bit cool.
Anyone got any tip's, guide's or fluff info on freebooter orks or other ideas that might be helpful for my project? (sorry for such general questions I'm at a bit of a brainstorming stage)

There is an awesome tutorial on here for making tricorner hats and frock coats. Also look for fantasy ork weapons their choppas axes and swords work a treat. If you want to buy some freebooter heads look for a company called spellcrow. The features and really defined and look amazing. I have some on a few of my freebooters.

Ooh thanks, I hadnt seen Spellcrow's heads before. Theyre are nice
Along with the 'crew torsos' they do which look a bit swash bucklerish

Are these nob sized? or boy sized?

same question?

I've also seen the max mini heads;
Anyone know if these goblin heads would be approximately gretchin sized? or too large?

I've just sprayed another bunch of minis with my fairy powerspray (only doing 10-15 at a time as I tend to lean into the sink giving me a bad back if I do too many at once)
Dont plan to be assembling anything untill theyre all stripped down to plastic and I've decided what bits to order / make with greestuff or modify etc.

Am getting quite keen on the freebooters knowing theres a selection of heads available when it turns out that I cant sculpt a decent tri-corner hat, the frock coats might be nice, must have a go at that for important orks atleast.

I still need to look into weaponry, sabres and muskets ~? Parrots and peglegs?

Vehicles - crows nest on the battlewagon? I can recall seeing a really cool fanboat ork truck conversion tht might suit them well ....(digs up a link)

The spellcrow heads are all boy sized. They usually send out a couple of freebies with them too. I mainly use the top set of leads as they have alot more character in my eyes. I've not found any parrots and believe he be looked, but if you have any stikk bomz laying about after a bit of trimming they make perfect peg legs.

I had a whole army of freebootaz about 150 all in all. I sold most of them, still have a few favourites knocking about somewhere.

really do like those Spell crow heads, I'm sure I'l be ordering some, probably both sets for varietys sake.

I've finished stripping down all the mini's now with jus the bases to go

A rough count seems to be; 10 nobz (5aobr, 5 nobz box set)
55 boyz ; 20 aobr, 5 fantasy bodies, 30 pairs of legs and torso.

aobr warboss

3 aobr deffkopta's

a bunch of bits including lots of shoota's choppas, sluggas, big shootas, rokkits's, claws, big choppa's, some deff guns, and burnas, nob combi weapons etc etc

As the entire lot was built using GW brand plastic glue, the entire lot came apart easy peasy and is now 99% clean, totally dismantled all but the nob bodies which seem like theyre staying. Better glue this time, although I'd like them to still come apart in the event I re-do them oneday. So superglue is probably going to be the weapon of choice, in particular loctite gel glue as thats what I have at hand

Next step will be to go over all the bitz and see if any need a 2nd go in the power spray, I think maybe a handfull will maximum.
And to do all the bases, theyre currently just pva glue + sand. which should come off easy enough. Need ideas for good basing themes for orks... all I can really come up with is junkyard or sandy desert.

Being freebootaz desert/desert island theme would be awesome. You could also try http://puppetswar.eu for some cool odds and sods

I have been tempted by their mexicano ork heads combined with kromlech's cactus basing kit hehe.
Their deff rolla looks mean too if/when i get / make a battlewagon maybe I'l use that one.

Edit; I'm having a shop around for alternative burnas or deffguns, I've got 4 of each of the official GW ones, I could always get another box of those no problem, but if I can find some reasonable ones, or build some halfway decent ones I'd be happy hehe.
