Subject: Inexpensive Ork army: is this possible?

Hey everyone, I've finally decided to play Orks as my army, mainly because they seem like the most fun.
I went to Amazon the other day and examined a number of boxed sets, including paint, totaling about 500 points and $200.
Is there a less expensive way, besides eBay (which I distrust)? Or is there a playable, low-cost list out there?
|
Finally chose Orks for my first army, will need help. Please be patient. |

Low cost lists... are not competive ones if you are going orks, We are a horde army and we remain expensive. no matter what models you go for sadly. The cheapest ways tend to be 1) the internet 2) local people for trades 3) retailers. Then we got the Looting, Any tank kit flyer kit whatso ever that you think you can loot and glue together with some plasticard might and might not save you some money

Hmm, okay. I guess I'll take it slowly - I can afford the list but not easily. It may take a few months until everything is bought.
In the meantime, to the cardboard! I'd better playtest some of the units from the list.

If you plan to buy things new, things will be expensive and there's little ways around that. You can get things cheaper via internet dealers but you're still going to spend a lot.
However, if you're truly wanting to save money, look up Assault on Black Reach (AOBR is used alot) orks. You get boys, deffkoptas, a warboss, and a squad of nobs. The box started at like 60, then went to 90. It came with a starter army of space marines, orks, and a rule book. That ork army is worth about 30 bucks, 15 bucks if it's been assembled. Becuase it's been out of production for a while, you might pay about 30 or so for used figures, but it's a good start.
Do not pay more than 30 for that set in good condition. It's all monopose, and from experience I can tell you that stuff doesn't move very fast when you're trying to sell it.

start small. if you can help it try not to buy more than 10 models at a time - that's how you end up with a lot (and I mean a lot) of unpainted models

Umm...I checked - AoBR is more than $200. That's just insane. I am not doing that.
Where can I even get that for $30?

Whoops, wasn't too specific. You don't buy it retail, you have to go used. The people selling it for 200 are just waiting for someone stupid enough to buy it at that price. Check out the swap shop and bartertown, search for it on there. I just did it a second ago and without looking too far into found a few people with it, some still on sprue.

AOBR has been out of production long enough to no longer be a value bargain. Deffkoptas from it are still good but thats only because the alternative is insanely expensive and dumb looking.
You literally have to kitbash everything if you want a cheap army. Keep stalking ebay though, orks tend to have some crazy cheap army deals now and then on there.
The thing about orks and kitbashing is theres no rules except for how small they are. Make them bigger, dont care...make them smaller is a nono. Even our vehicles arent restricted in gun mounted positions (the ONLY hard-fixed locations are access points if we get a "ard Case, but who does that?)
You can make all the guns on a BW a turret, because all it says in the codex is "Has guns mounted on it" lol.
Not like its hard to kitbash orks anyway. Random bits n pieces, spiky bitz, big gun, ork face HEY! i just made an ork *name here*!!!

Used to be a lot cheaper to make ork armies during the blackreach era. Now not so much.
You could get 140 orks for 150 bucks.

I routinely get Ork boys for about 40c US. Like everyone else suggests, go for AoBR models.
Then scratch build trukks, and buy a bits box from an IG player to use for Loota conversions.
If your willing to put in the effort Orks are by far the cheapest army. If your not, well, your simply not going to get an army on the cheap.

There's no reason to distrust ebay. Ebay itself guarantees that you won't get scammed (they'll refund your money and go after the seller), so it's actually safer than dealing with random people on a forum. I've had no problems at all buying models on ebay, including $500 OOP stuff.

Before buying on ebay read the description of the item well. If its full of fillers to make it huge, ignore it theres probably fine line text youre missing.
However, if there is an unsatisfactory condition not listed by the seller, you can talk to the seller through ebay about a return, or if theyre being a douche contact ebay themselves and you'll get your money back and the seller will regret it.
Ive never had issues with ebay.

Trading through the swap shop and bartertown works the same. Seller screw you over? Open a dispute with PayPal, get your money back. PayPal pretty much always favors the buyer.

I have bought and sold literally THOUSANDS of dollars of 40k stuff over the years on ebay - its fine.
As suggested, read the descriptions and look at the pictures.
Even with that however, it will take time.
I suggest you go on your course of slowly playing and learning the army, maybe picking up a unit when you can afford one.
Play, add unit, paint it, play more, add another.
If you only buy one unit a month, this hobby is not that expensive (really, how much do people spend on food or xbox games in a year?).
Also, scratch building works great with orks - I have seen tons of cool looking ork vehicles made from random cheap toys (trucks, cars, buggies, etc.) as their base model.
See if anyone in your local area can give you a hand with this aspect of it. If you live in north Texas or the twin cities, PM me, and I will help you out.
best of luck.

Indeed things became heated on that one lol.
To the OP, yeah Orks ain't cheap. You should always plan the purchases to favor one another. 2 boxes of Lootaz + a box of Boys will get you 8 burnas, 8 lootas, and some extra boyz (with some mek bitz too).
2 Trukks can make 3 buggies. So on and so forth. Just be creative.
It never hurts to ask around your FLGS. There may be a few players with extra orks lying around.

Yeah, trukks for buggies is a big one. You shouldnt ever buy buggie kits, theres not much in them and theyre roughly the same cost as trukks which gives much more for the cost. Also, buggies really need to be personalized, the stock ones are kinda boring. i have one i basically got for free, and i detest it lol

As an Ork player myself I have saved the most money by buying things of ebay and converting things i have lying around. I am making a dakka jet from a wwII bomber i had in my closet, I have made a trukk/battle wagon from a toy army jeep I had laying in the yard ect. Get ahold of some bitz, lots of glue and a good pair of clippers and you can save lots of money and have a unique ork army!
