Sorry if similar questions have been posted before or if this is more suitable for the army list forum, but I'm just looking for suggestions for builds and tactics for a fluffy IG force. I'm thinking of collecting guard but fancy some allies just for the diversity of units and allowing tactics other than gun-line and vendettas with late game objective grabbing squads and mech guard. Quite fancy having some elite infantry and units that allow me to cause distractions in my opponents backfield so was considering a guard gun line with drop podding grey hunters and wolf guard to threaten the rear but this seems very over used but reading fluff it would make a nice survivors of the 1st Armaggedon war for, a theme I quite fancy using. I'm trying to keep away from using psykers as I'm going for the idea that in the aftermath of Armageddon they'd probably hate chaos and grey knights and have a mistrust of all things warp, also trying to keep exotic weapons to a minimum to show they are unsupported so plasma, melta and lascannon should be mainly for specific squads rather than common infantry. At one point I liked the idea of throwing logan into a blob squad to anchor them down with ATSKNF and allow versatility by granting tank hunters relentless and preferred enemeapons being hany for deep strikiy, as well as scoring wolf guard but alas on reading up on this found that it didn't carry other to allies damned FAQs

The other 2 allies I'm considering are a turn about face on my stance on psykers, Dark angels allies putting Azrael and a ML2 librarian in and Al rahem outflanking blob hoping to score endurance and enfeeble on the bio table for the novelty of aggressive playing guardsmen supported by deathwing. Or using elder rules foe counts as units to represent the guardsmen having to improvise due to not having the support of the munitorium, so wraithguard acting as heavily armoured troopers dug in to hold home objectives their weapons being handy against deep striking termis and assault vehicles; pathfinders giving guardsmen effective snipers and a farseer with runes of warding whose powers I don't use to supply psychic defence; though I have to admit I'm not familiar with elder or how to effectively use psychic defence.

Sorry for the vagueness of my post, to summarise I'm looking for:
>Suggestions on builds and tactics that would fit the theme an IG force that is working with the might of the umperium behind it.
>Unusual tactics or ally combinations outside of "stick a rune priest in it"

Not looking for super competitive builds just something unusual or with a bit of character, if it can put up a half decent fight that's a bonus.

Cheers

Well after narrowing it down to whats left you have the option of feilding only Guardsman with Lasguns.

No Lascannons, Melta or Plasma. These are the best weapons the guard have why wouldn't you want to use them.

You could use grenade launchers, but that STR 6 ap - may be too powerful

Not really much we can do for you here :S, because literally EVERY guard list can be fluffy in some way.

Yeah, it seems like you're confusing "fluffy" with "bad at winning". A list without melta/plasma/LCs isn't fluffy, it's just bad.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Just max out 3 IG platoons with every able body you can, make a cardboard tide and use creed to keep giving first rank fire second rank fire lol no special or heavy weapons just all lasguns

I would sign this contract but I already ate the potato

Where are you getting that lascannons and melta are any more rare than flamers and autocannons? The funny thing being that as far as the fluff I have seen the power pack weapons are much easier to resupply than the ammo weapons as they can recharge them from fires/solar/local power grid/etc. whereas the ammo requires actually production facilities or a supply train/raid (BTW most non IoM forces do not use the same ammo).

The SW route with grey hunters in DP is a pretty decent army but the rune priest is the usual suspect for your HQ.

The DA force is pretty good with drop pod 5 man suicide special weapon squads and a libby with a infravisor and PFG in a blobb but you really need some decent weapons on them. With your restrictions that would be autocannons and flamer/GL which are not really that good.

What are you thinking in terms of heavy support? Artillery works well with the prescience libby. Manticores are great but if you are going for poorly supplied than a missile launcher might not be the best choice. A mix of basilisks and griffons could probably do it but they will not be as good. On the other hand FW heavy artillery would be great and could be really fluffy but require a pro FW attitude.

I guess that could work if you included a few Commisars with Power Axes and gave all the Sergents Power Axes as well. No super comptitive but would work ok.
