I know there have been a few posts about this subject before but I am thinking of using grey primer on my Biel-tan Eldar. My theory is hopefully i get the coverage i get in black primer but can still see all the detail and work up to a nice white easier and moreefficiently

I've read a few posts about Krylon and unfortunately I cant buy it in the UK so was wondering what other primers you Brits have been using and whether this train of thought is ultimately wise.

I use Tamiya's TS range for my basecoats, when I use a spray on basecoat. my GK are done using their german grey.

I use Halford's automotive grey primer for just about everything. It's reasonably priced and I can't fault the quality at all; they do a good range of other coloured spray paints as well.

I use grey primer almost exlcusively nowadays, as it is a lot more neutral than black or white. Rather than Halfords I use Wilco as theirs is a little cheaper.Make sure you get the plastic primer rather than just grey spray paint.

I recently turned to Vallejo surface primer. The biggest downside is that it's advisable to let it set 24-48 hours, it consolidates and stabilize (else, it could peel off, if you're not paying enough attention)
It is easy to apply w/ airbrush or normal brush, it allows a smooth cover with more thinned paints. It may desaturate some of the lightest, most thinned basecoats, but then a second hand fixes it, if needed.

I use Vallejo polyurethane primer through my airbrush, though it works brushed on as well. I have both black and white but they sell a grey one as well. That said I have recently started mixing the two for a grey primer and am really pleased with the result particularly for muted colours.

+1 for Vallejo's polyurethane but if you don't have an airbrush I've heard some good reviews about Halfords primers.

Is the can you use labeled as 'grey primer' or as 'grey plastic primer' ? I know they do both, and will be using a grey primer on my next project, seems likely that halfords is my most readily available place and I wondered if their standard primer melted the plastics or not.

I don't recall seeing any mention of plastic on the can (I'll have another look though), but I have been using it on roughly half a dozen plastic warships with no ill effects to speak of, just nicely primed parts. I own no finecast models so can't say how it may perform on those.
