I was playing a game last night and I had a situation where my oppenant charged into combat with one of my guys. I had a spell caster near by and wanted to cast a spell on him. In the rule book we have (its the one from the fellowship of the ring) it says heros can't cast spells if they are in combat but doesn't say if they can cast spells into combat.
I'd say that, if the power is an offensive power, use the rules for shooting - if you're good, you can't, if you're evil, 1-3 means you hit your own guy and 4-6 means you hit the enemy.
I know we weren't sure. I had two ring wraiths circling boromir and was planning to cast the spell where he gets a fight value of 1 and 1 attack (sorry can't remember the name). When he up an heroic moves himself into combat with one of them. Now we've both played warhammer for a looooonnnnnngggg time so think he's probably safe from magic retribution, but couldn't find a definitive yes or no.
I thought this would be a pretty common occurance so everyone would know but I guess not.
You can cast into combat as long as your caster is free to do so, its one of the biggest advantages to neutralising powerful heroes, think of it as levelling the playing field.
