If a helldrake wishes to vector strike something, can it do so and finish it's movement off the board?

I ask, as I now own two Crimson Hunters, and intend to use them in this manner. I fly on the board, move to an edge and vector dance my shots inwards on the board. I figure that the drakes (likely in the middle of the board) cannot pass through/over my model, and end on the board, thus avoiding the vector strike.

Am I correct in this assumption, that if a model is not on the board, it cannot inflict a wound?

The requirements for VS are "At the end of the Movement phase, nominate any one unengaged enemy unit the model has moved over that turn." P.43

So you can nominate a unit that the Helldrake moved over even if the Drake is off the table.

There's nothing I see that prevents the Helldrake from Vector Striking if it moves off the board.

It passed over your unit, so it can VS.

My stance was that a model off the board cannot allocate a wound or kill things.

Being that the model is not in play at that point in time, as the vector strike is resolved at the end of the phase.

Interesting question...

We have the rule about units with Beginning of Movement or Beginning of turn abilities not being able to use them if they start in reserves without specific permissions.

I'd have to reread the Vector Strike rule, but offhand, I'm guessing no.

Please quote a rule to back up your stance. The Vector Strike rule allows you to pick a unit you moved over and wounds/huts are resolved against the unit using random allocation with no LoS is required.

Your stance has no rules backing, howver. The fact that the rulebook FAQ states to use Random allocation is proof enough that it works, as you would just use normal allocation otherwise.

For all Intents and purposes you have to imagine the Helldrake making the attack on his way off the board. As in when it flies over that unit. But instead of confusing matters by making you stop attack and then carry on, the rule book just tells you to do it after your movemeant phase.

What if, in the special case, where a Heldrake has not enough movement to fully move over a flyer but has sufficient movement to touch the edge of the table? (This can happen when a flyer or other model is hugging the table edge)

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

"Intents and purposes".

And yes, this works fine. The only argument against it is a legalistic one without any text to support it.

Righto, seems as though there's a consensus and I was wrong. I'll admit that

Am I right in thinking this tactic would work against FMC's, as they cannot leave play like a flyer can?
