Hey Everyone,

Just started playing Warhammer 40k again after 8-10 years & I have been unable to find a updated codex on assassins since 3rd edition (I have the 3rd edition codex at home & it specifically says can be used by any imperial army). On the Games Workshop site they are listed under Grey Knights. Does this mean a unit that was once 100% usable in all imperial armies is now restricted to Grey Knights? Has this been specifically written in one of the newer codex's?

Thanks for time

Yeah, Assassains are now available to the Grey Knights.

You'll find their rules in there.

Keep in mind that allies can now be taken. So if you use an Imperial army you'll still be able to take an assassin.

Thanks for replying. I understand they are available to Grey Knights, & could potentially be added to any imperial army via allies, but is it written somewhere that they are no longer able to be used in imperial armies otherwise?

In 3rd edition the codex states:

"You must have a imperial army of some description (space marines, imperial guard, sisters of battle, for example) to use a assassin. If you don't have one of these armies you're going to have to come up with a very good reason why a assassin should be supporting your cause!"

Those rules no longer apply - indeed the actual rules for the assassins' stats you will find are very outdated as well!

Essentially, yes, to take an assassin in the ordinary flow of things, you need an hq and troops choice from codex grey knights to come along with him, forming an allied detachment. This is possible to do with the special character Inquisitor Coteaz and a unit of inquisitorial henchmen, if you're not keen on the actual grey knights.

If you're playing among friends, you might as well ask them if they're cool with you using assassins as additional elites choices. Be aware that they may become a bit shirty after the vindicare assassin blows up another land raider!

There are no longer any legal 3rd edition codexes. Sisters and Grey Knights have been updated. 6th edition has a chart for how allies work.

Thanks again for your replies. I know I have been out of the picture for quite some time but does this upset anyone else? Has this happened with any other units in WH40k? Where a unit was available to armies (x) & then suddenly no longer able to be used & only available to army (y)? I'm a IG player & even in Dawn of War the video games the vindicare assassin was exclusive to the IG. I'm just don't understand why its limited to GK players. I of course could take GK as a ally but I prefer to play entirely IG. Thanks for your time

Sisters of Battle don't have access to any Inquisition stuff anymore, barring Grey Knight allies.

Does that count?

Your joking? So like witch hunters etc are GK specific now also?

Witch hunter inquisitors? Yes.

Sisters are a ministorum army now - no inquisitors, no special assassin access, nothing.

Yupyup.

The only stuff we have that's not pure Sisters of Battle now are Ecclesiarchy Priests, Confessors, and "Battle Conclaves" which are units made up of Death-Cult Assassins, Crusaders, and/or Arco-flagellants.

If your 40k experience is 10 years old, you can basically forget everything you remember.

And when a Codex is rewritten it invalidates all previous versions. And if a codex is simply too old to be used in a current edition it is also invalidated.
