Hi everyone. I've decided to get into 40k and settled on IG as the army I want to collect. I'm looking for a bit of advice on this list, first of all to find out whether or not it's legal, and secondly how well it would play. Having not played before I don't have any real idea of tactics beyond trying to take things that can counter anything an opponent might have - whether it be hordes, heavy infantry or vehicles. I ran out of points by the time I got to the HQ, so I've a feeling that might be quite underpowered at the moment. Thanks!

HQ
Company command squad
2 grenade launchers

Troops
Veteran squad
9 veterans, sergeant, 3 flamers

500 points doesn't give you much wriggle room. I started as guard, there is two main tactics. Gunline hiding behind an aegis line (must buy for you) and mechanized with lots of chimeras and tanks. The veterans will get torn apart footslogging and the devil dog would get torn apart as well. Depending on how much anti armor they have. But even a couple autocannons could kill it. You could drop the devil dog and give the veterans meltas and a chimera. possibly even the ccs a chimera as well. Just a thought mate. goodluck.

A good soldier obeys without question. A good officer commands without doubt.

Thanks for the pointers, I think as I expand I'll be heading down the mech route so I might as well try to get used to the style of play, I've tried to fit some Chimeras in and come up with this.

Welcome to plastic crack! ...cough... I mean welcome to the hobby! IG are a great army; still top tier as far as competitiveness goes, but that shouldn't concern you just yet. More importantly, they've got a great line of models to collect with lots of different special characters, sub-sects and play styles to choose from. At 500 points, that list is just fine. Some people can't deal with 3 tanks at 500 points.

Best of luck, the Emperor protects.....

Rule #1 is Look Cool.

Thanks! The background and models were what attracted me really - I'm hoping to go for a Praetorian style, although I know that might not fit too well with a mechanised army.

Much better man. Again it's hard to make a list at such small point totals however keep in mind as you go, orders are your best friend. They can easily turn the tide of a game. Twinlinked lascannons all firing at a flying bloodthirster can do some damage. or even better if its grounded you can do some SERIOUS damage.
