Quick question for the gathered esteemed generals:

I'm putting together some different Ork lists that utilize three Deffkoptas I own. When it comes to harassing the front lines in the early game (they'e being used as fun-yet-sacrificial units that help my Boyz/Nobz get into fighting range more easily), would people recommend I take TL big shootas or TL rokkits? Both have their advantages (more shots for big shootas, more power for rokkits)? I also want to make sure I'm getting the most out of the points I spend in total, as that 30 extra points could give my Nobz 'eavy armor on top of their cybork bodies and a few extra grots (or two more Lootas!), for example.

Keep in mind: I've already had a lengthy discussion on keeping them in my lists altogether (Dakkamite, I did buy another cash-cheap, large mob of Boyz on eBay to swap out in place of Deffkoptas when the mood strikes ), so I'm not getting rid of them. But when I do want to use them I also want to get the most out of them, so: opinions?

Also 2: I'm not really in it for tournaments, but I don't want every game to be a COMPLETE circus

Magnitize them and swap depending on opponents, if they have mobs, use the BS, Armor, use the RL. I curently run 5 TL RL in my 2k list. they scout ahead, and shoot at the side armor, 5 st 8 TL can do some damage to most side or rear armor.

Yeah, I have three AOBR koptas I got as a set on eBay that all came with rokkits - I have no problem playing counts-as

I built mine as they were but then added little plasticard wings on the bottom just behind the 'ski' type things. Then I put guns on the wings. On another one I got the dakkaguns from a warbike turned them upside down and stuck them at the front underneath the rokkits. They look nice and I can say they're rokkits or big shootas when I use them... Also dreadnought arms make awesome buzzsaws. I'll stick some pics up tomorrow if you want.

Oh come on, whats that all about?

I actually love deffkoptas. I outflank them with a bikerboss and they generally wreck havoc.

For harassment, I'd go for rokkits. Nobody really cares about a big shoota hitting their units, but everyone is afraid of that lucky rokkit shot. Remember though, sometimes its better to withdraw the kopta rather than try to have it eat bullets for your boys, because they are an almost guarenteed way to grab linebreaker.

I use tl rokkits on my deffkoptas, buggies and treks. Their role is tank hunting period (for my style anyway). The boyz advance (in vehicles or on foot) maxed out with big shootas. They go after anything that explodes like a blood sausage. Trukks get big shootas...

and if I could only talk da Big Meks into designing a way for DakkaJets to drop trukks full of da lads I'd be set.

You said my army needed more boyz in it, which was a good suggestion. I trolled eBay for cheap boyz* and found a lot of 18 models for $20, which is a decent price (even if they are Gorkamorka models - I'm going to have an all-vintage army soon between those, 2ed boyz and AOBR deffkoptas).

Getting linebreaker, especially if I can go first, is always the first VP I win. Scout + TB with a/multiple big bomm(s) dropped on their HQ is such awesome first turn dickery, plus Jink saves. And two woundssss. Flying Nobz FTW. Yeah, keeping them in cover until it's time to zip around is the way to go. Good point on the Rokkits, my concern was really for the 3 shots you get with Big shootas. But if they aren't having much effect what good are they.

*thank god this line is in context

TL Big Shootas are fantastic in a unit of five outflanking koptas. They can come on and *nail* rear armour or objective campers. That said, if theres no AV10 or objective campers for them to target they are a bit of a waste of points.

Don't get me wrong man, I *want* that big bomm thing to work, but 15 points to put some S4 hits on a squad... doesn't seem very good. I mean 25 points can put a smaller S5 blast on their leader every turn from a Lobba. I ran a test of it just now against an HQ with 5 dudes, for three bomms I got one Marine and one wound on that HQ. But if thats how you like to place, the audacity of it is certainly worth something.

Gorkamorka models though... I'm jealous. They look awful but their rarer and therefore cooler than our ugly standard boys. I got some mad boys and freebootas the other day from 2nd ed and I'm very happy with them

I should post some new lists in the older thread I started to show how I've been refining them.
