With the release of the new Eldar codex, most Eldar units now have the Ancient Doom special rule which gives them the Hatred of Slaaneshi Daemons or models with a Mark of Slaanesh. As well as a -1 penalty when taking a Fear test.
My question is, should Dark Eldar units now get this Ancient Doom rule too? Being the same race and all..

In the rules, no. Stick to the rules.
Note that the "in-between" Eldar, the Harlequins, also don't have Ancient Doom despite pretty much every non-vehicle in the codex having it.
Flavorwise, fear of Slaanesh is what drove the Craftworld Eldar into their super-strict societies and their adherence to soulstones.; it makes sense for them to have Ancient Doom. Harlequins know they will be saved by the Laughing God upon death, so they don't wear soulstones and don't fear Chaos despite dedicating their lives to fighting it. Dark Eldar hate magic/sorcery/etc and don't wear soulstones; they know they're damned and spend so much effort prolonging their lives with horrific acts that they don't fear Slaanesh even though they know they're ultimately fighting to defy him/her/it.

I'm pretty sure Dark Eldar fear Slaanesh- that's why they're hiding in the webway- so as not to get eaten by She Who Thirsts. And that's also why they've forbidden psykers, because the risk of a daemonic incursion into Commoragh is too great plus there's a possibility Slaanesh might devour their souls.. In Path of the Renegade, it mentions them using Soulstones to hide from daemons. I think it'd be perfectly legit to give some Dark Eldar units Ancient Doom special rule. Also- the Dark Eldar aren't Chaos worshippers, they worship the Dark Muses ie Dark Eldar who accomplished major feats of awesome and in turn have become legendary.

Since Dark Eldar can regenerate themselves, with the help of a Humuncli, they don't exactly always die. As long as they have the payment, and a remaining body part they may be regrown. Not totally a death. It does say something about a strong will as well. The knowledge of the chance to "stay alive" might be enough to refrain from that particular fear. Of course this is all fluff related.

Yes but if they can't afford it, then they face True Death and their souls get devoured by She Who Thirsts. So I'd say they've as good a reason to hate Slaaneshi folk as Craftworld Eldar.

Except the Dark Eldar think they're clever and strong enough to outwit it and stay alive. The Craftworld Eldar try not to feed Slaneesh, the Dark Eldar just don't want it to have THEM. They don't care if Warrior Clive gets killed as long as they get away.

I will accept them having Ancient Doom if their flyers also gain Vector Dancer

Sadly negative, you need written permission to use any special ability. I doubt we will see this in a FAQ or errata in the short term future. They already have plans to release this information through the printing of a new codex, and are reluctant to release details about codex's too far ahead of time. This means most FAQ's focus on the changes needed to patch up old codex's to use the new rules and not what future changes they intend to implement. They will simply get around to adding the additional special powers when the codex is released, there are likely more pressing concerns then focusing on trying to update every change in a single FAQ before even releasing the book meant to outline those changes. Very likely we will see Ancient Doom special rule added to at least a handful of Dark Eldar units for sure. That is a simple conclusion, given the interlinked fluff behind the two Eldar factions and their hatred for the god they... well to put it cleanly as possible... 'lovingly' brought into this existence. It makes sense for them to have this special rule, no doubting that, but I can't give you the rule on common sense alone. That is not how rules work, more so in Warhammer where green skins dictate the logic. We have to wait till they give us written permission to use the rule before it can be implemented. Likely the earliest we will see it is when they release the Dark Eldar codex.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures. |
