Subject: IG 1249pt Sentinel List
|
 |
Pyromaniac Hellhound Pilot
In the warp, searching for Marbo
|
Made some tweeks to my list after some additional experience with Exterminator tanks. This is for casual games, no turnies.
First Idea
Second Idea
Lord Commissar - Powerfist
Stormtroopers (8x troopers 1x Sergeant)
2x Meltaguns
Chimera
Veterans
1x Flamer
2 x Meltaguns
Chimera (H.Flamer + Multi)
Veterans
3x Plasma Guns
Chimera (same weapons)
Armored Sentinel Squad - camo
2x Lascannon Sentinels
Armored Sentinel Squad - camo
2x Autocannon Sentinels
Scout Sentinel Squad
2x Lascannon Sentinels
Executioner - Storm Bolter Pintel
3x Heavy Bolters
I've had a lot of problems trying to overcome Marine Armor saves/ FNP with Exterminators and decided I'd go for Demolisher. I figure with it's limited range, It would fit in with my idea of rapid advancement. Being covered by my Vetmeras, while my sentinel squads spread out providing Heavy (interchangeable) Weapons Fire. Should I come against an army with less armor I'd consider using Exterminator or some other variant of the LRBT. The current list (haven't purchased all of it yet) is mainly for MEQ armies, and I love how easily I can make the weapons on Sentinels interchangeable so it should be easy to adjust for different lists.

How about going missile launchers on two of the sentinel squads for some flexibility. And also you might wanna stick a commissar in the squad that won't be accompanied by the lord commissar.

Kudos for using anything from the FA slot other than Vendettas. I love the sentinel models; they're awesome. If your meta is super marine heavy this is fine but you're pretty light on anti-horde.

My last game was a 3 v 3 (1250pt each player), it was my IG with Green tide and CSM vs 3 spacemarine armies. Yeah, that was super Marine Heavy.

I love sentinels, very useful and retribution and they look cool. IMO least used IG unite +1 goes to
you.
I think your sentinels need variety, equip 1 squad with autocannons. Btw are they armored or scout ?

They are Armored Sentinels, but I play casual games and (most of) my fellow players wouldn't mind if I ran some as scout as long as I had a way to mark them out. But, I really would like to run them as Armored for the most part. I'll also make them so that I can swap weapons, so no worries in that. The list above now says that they are armored.

I would recomend the plasma based leman russ. It is not ordanance so you can move and fire all weapon systems.
I run mine with 3 hvy bolters and a heavy stubber.

I wonder if I should get rid of Grenadier since just about all TAC squads, or any squad that'd fire upon my vets in the open would have some special weapon (like a plasma gun). This would force my entire squad to make a cover save (if near cover, which they should be) instead of just losing one guy to that and the rest getting Armor saves against bolters. Of course, it would help against Gets Hot!, and vehicle explosions though. If I did drop them, it'd give me 60 more points to spend on other things. Or perhaps I should just stay away from cover.
Thoughts?

Running some scout sentinels with lascannons would be nice to outflank and get side or rear shots on vehicles.

Agreed, I think it would be good to have one of the squadrons ran as Scouts.

Yeah, your both probably right. It'd help keep my opponent off balance, and (if they make some good cover saves) provide a good distraction as I move the rest of my army into position. I'll update my list later to better reflect the suggestion. Automatically Appended Next Post: Before I update my list with scouts, executioners and such, back to my concerns about Grenadier. Think it's worth it for this type of list?

420 points invested into 6 average BS3 AT shots sounds like a really bad idea to me, whichever way you spin it. I could have 9 S8 AP3 shots at BS4 and 3 S8 AP3 shots at BS5 for 30 points less with Devastator squads. In Guard terms, for 10 points more you could have twice as many shots by taking 12 Lascannon HWS'. And they would be harder to kill unless a Helldrake appears.
6 AV12 vehicles sounds great on paper but in practice they're about as useful as a load of broken bricks. I've taken Sentinels before with Multi Laser/ Hunter Killer Missile to support the rest of my army either by acting as a wall blocking routes to my important units like tanks or as fire support, but honestly they were never the best choice.
Because they're so naff you're forced to invest into focusing the Storm Troopers and one of the Vet squads also onto AT duty.
That leaves you with a few Lasguns, a single S10 pie plate, a few Chimera weapons and 3 Plasma Guns for neutralizing their infantry elements. If they all remained spotless until they fired and worked flawlessly (which I can guarantee you they won't) you'd probably be killing or severely wounding one Tactical squad a turn. And the worst part is that all of that firepower is medium-short range.

Personally I wouldn't run grenadiers, those 60 pts could probably be better spent elsewhere. If you find your vets getting devastated from explosions, then maybe.

Alright, I dropped the Grenadier and gave my two A.Sentinel squads Camo to help them survive better, and dropped two lascannons for Autocannons. I dropped a meltagun down to a flamer which I believe would be better help at that range. Turned the Demolisher into a Executioner with lots of Bolter dakka. Turned a A.Sentinel squad into a Scout squad.
I know people might not like Sentinels for how little you might get for them, but I'm building this list to be casual, fluffy, and for my love of Sentinels. I want them to have a decent presence in my list. (and because I already ordered 5 more ((will have 6 total)) !)
Thoughts about idea 2?

A squad of 3 heavy weapons is insta killed buy anything s6 or higher, unless you have something to buff their leadership they arent worth it.

I gave a couple A. Sentinel squads camo because I figured they might get focus fired down. Looking at my current list, what would you shoot down first? I plan to have my plasma vet chimera constantly blocking enemys to provide cover for my tank. Would it be better to shift camo to my tank for a better cover save, to my chimeras to be able to better keep my guys alive and so I don't lose my mobile cover. Perhaps I won't have them providing cover for more then one or two turns seeing how the Executioner has better range then the Demolisher.
Or should I just try my best with the cover on field and spend the 40 pts elsewhere?

Unless you're a twit you'll have the HWS' in cover. There are few S6+ weapons that can shoot the whole way across the board with multiple shots that aren't considered AT (in which case they'll be targeting vehicles first for easier kills) and even if you do the lose the unit to a casualty and a failed morale check (which is unlikely in itself) you still have 3 squads left. Still 3 more shots than the Sentinels.
On the other hand, weak 2 HP AV12 vehicles are going to mullered and targeted with the deadliest AT first thing, as the Demolisher isn't an immediate concern.
But yes, you would be wise to invest in a cheap 65 point minimum Command Squad with a regimental banner for its re-roll.

I edited my first post to show my second (current) idea for the list. I removed the Demolisher for something that has more dakka. Also, made a pair of sentinels into scouts.

I tried out the Excutioner against a squad of space marines, and gave them all 5+ coversaves, and got anywhere from 4 to 7 kills out of all that shooting. I didn't add a FNP check, and the guys were in a circular group about 2" apart. I don't know if this is really that good, but with range on my side it might be enough.
Thoughts?
