Ok, so the abyssal staff is a template weapon whose weapon strength goes against your targets leadership as opposed to toughness. If you're shooting at a unit with mixed ld is it treated like mixed toughness and it's a majority thing or is the single higher ld used like when taking a ld test? I can sort of see it going either way.

The only possible way to resolve it is to replace "toughness" with "leadership", given that is how they have ruled for e.g. instant death

The answer you are looking for is on page 7 of the basic rule book. At the very bottom of the page, left hand side, bottom bullet point. That highlights what happens if your unit has more then one leadership score and how to resolve such issues. Unless your rule specifically overrides that bullet point, then the leadership of a unit as a whole is always going to be the highest number provided from all the profiles involved.

This is an unusual situation, I will agree, but I don't see where it would ignore the rules for leadership that has been put in place. Having looked over the rule in question I can find nothing that states you take the average leadership scores exactly like you do the toughness. All it says is to use the leadership characteristic for the numbers instead of toughness. It is a little vague, so I can see the counter arguments stance that this is not a leadership test, so we can ignore that bullet point, but that creates a huge problem.

We don't have rules for mixed leadership rolls, ignoring page 7, anywhere in the book do we?

That's for leadership tests only, so you're incorrect.

Because it is a shooting, template weapon - I interpret such as the exact same as toughness (majority is used) but just replacing it with leadership since the rules for the staff say it's against "leadership rather than toughness". Because of this and templates use majority toughness, I assume same rules apply to the staff, just pointed at a different number.

I would love to hear other's chime in on this though since this is only my interpretation and would love to know if I've been playing it wrong.

That only applies to Ld tests.

GW have consistently ruled that you replace T with Ld for e.g. ID. Makes no sense to be inconsistent.

I'll concede, on the grounds it is the only way to proceed.
