I was reading through the codex and am curious on a couple of items with Gaze of Death.

1 - since it is done during the fight sub-phase, would it count as a close combat attack for the proposes of Entropic Strike?

2 - if I challenge an enemy character who is attached to a unit, would Gaze of Death affect the by standards?

Gaze of Death is not a close combat attack and not counted as part of combat resolution, as such they affect all models under the blast marker.
