I read a book on Cassino and the Kiwi's leapt out as being insanely brave.

2nd New Zealand Division were an impressive formation, they came right to the brink in the Third Battle as Unit Cohesion began to breakdown and morale was non-existant. I think a lesser unit would have broken, but they endured and were hollowed out by Cassino.
On page 163 of the Book, Rommel is quoted as saying the New Zealander's were the best troops he ever fought.

VC and Bar, of the New Zealand 2nd Division, was the only person to be awarded the Victoria Cross twice during World War II. This pretty much covers it.
