Subject: Assault rule vs Counter Charge rule

Had an odd rules debate at our local club night. It was Khador vs. Rhulic.
The Wroughthammer Rockram used its Assault ability to charge Sorscha (not in charge range). The Assault rule states that after it moves but before it makes it's charge attack it can fire it's gun even if the charge was unsuccessful. When it finished it's move it was within the range of the War Dogs Counter Charge ability (if enemy ends their movement with in X inches the Dog can make a charge attack). The war Dog Counter Charged and then used its Return ability to move in front of Sorscha which then blocked any chance for a ranged shot that the Rockram had (no line could be drawn from base to base.)
The debate was as follows, Does the unit that used the Assault rule still get to make the shot before the Dog gets to use the counter charge ability or Does it work like an interrupt where the War dog gets to counter charge and block the ranged attack from happening; making the original target invalid?
Any insight into this would be appreciated.

The counter charge is triggered by the end of movement. So the dog moves, attacks and then can return all before the Rockram can make its assault shot.
Timing from the various abilities:
The dog counter charges immediately after movement ends. The dog returns immediately after making a charge attack.
The Rockram shoots just before it ends its activation.
For a more in depth look at the timing check out the timing rules toward the back of both Prime and Primal.

Yeah, the countercharge (and return) happen "immediately" after the movement, the assault shot just happens anytime before the model attacks. Countercharge first, assault shot second.

That's what we were leaning toward as well, resolved it that night with a dice roll but now we now. Thanks everyone, it was a very strange rules debate.

As a generalization, if a rule has a very strict timing (after movement) and another has a more general timing (before action), then the specific will act first if the 2 could happen at roughly the same time.
