Had this happen tonight and my buddy and I had no idea how to handle it. Even after reading the rules...granted it was late.

The Situation....

My purifiers are locked in assault with his Spritseer in my shooting phase. This assault is happening adjacent to a wave serpent. In my shooting phase I blow the wave serpent up causing a 5 inch explosion. This wounds and kills the Spiritseer. This leaves my purifier squad with nothing to do. We couldn't decide what they do from there..

The Question...

Do the purifiers consolidate, shoot and assault?
Do they just consolidate?
Do they not consolidate and then shoot and assault?
Or do they just sit there and flick the bean the rest of the turn?

On the spot we just decided they could consolidate D6 inches..

It would be great for some light to be shed on this topic.

Consolidation happens "at the end of a combat" p27. Sounds like your combat ended. The unit is now unengaged in the Shooting phase and can act normally, as there is nothing that says otherwise.

I saw this one recently, only a week or so ago. The general consensus was, if I remember:

1) You do not consolidate, that happens only at the end of the assault phase and a few other times during special rules.
2) You are no longer engaged, so the restrictions on shooting are lifted.
3) You can assault again as long as you do not do something in the shooting phase that would prevent it.

Yup.

It was caused by scattered blast template then.
