Thinking about and I am interested in doing a 2250 drop pod army. But not sure what to take or what codex would make the best use W/O forgeworld.

BA works good with their asm getting them basically for free

BT also have very good drop pod armies since their pods are cheaper, have potms and the units inside don't have to exit when it lands and can re-enter per the faq so you can build some cheesey lists with devastators and other things

5 points per pod is not enough to justify a sub-par army. BA pods do not have POTMS (page 5 of their FAQs). And even if they did, who cares, since they have one weapon anyway... Also, the FAQ you are talking about, the one about keeping units inside or having them re-enter the pod, does not exist.

Go with SW, imho.

Black Templars do not have devastators. And the whole drop pod shenanigans stunt won't fare well in reality.

For a drop pod list, I wouldn't use Blood Angels (they have better ways of getting in combat) or Dark Angels (really not their thing). Any of the others would work better. Black Templars would be nasty because even if your units are wounded by gunfire, they get free moves towards the shooters. Couple a rear-echelon drop pod attack with Predators and Vindicators with POTMS in the front, that may be a dangerous battlefield...

Second vote for Wolves.

a. Rune Priests. Right, two of them. Runic Weapons to give the new eldar the middle finger. Are there Crisis Suits in your future? JoWW. - possibly the best *cheap* HQ in the game

(although for half the cost, the ethereal is a contender)

b. cheap dual Plasmagun units (second gun is free!) or MG, of course
c. Best Power Armored Troops in the game (tied with Plague Marines). Counter Attack, 2 CCWs, MotW, Banner, etc.

Space wolves
2 special weapons for cheap and really nasty to try and melee out.
Also the wolf priest giving preferred enemy against a unit type combos really well with combi-plasma on wolf guard on the drop.

SW

Use Logan to go full drop pod Wolf Guard and you can mix and match special weapons and armors to fullest effect. Tons of versatility and customization. Plus, as previously mentioned, SW have highly cost efficient Rune Priests with access to Divination and arguably some of the strongest psychic defense in the game.

Actually the faq does exist read the drop pod assault rules for them it says nothing about them having to exit their pods or not being able to re-enter the faq made BT pods basically a deep striking transport and it can move if you toss a techmarine in a pod since the BT drop pod assault doesn't mention their immobolised result not being able to be repaired so toss a techmarine in that command squad full of plasma and laugh as you ride around in a plasma gunboat that shouldn't work at all

GummyBear is correct. The BT FAQ has made Drop Pod bunkers an option for BT. There is a large thread about this on YMDC. There is a general consensus that the people who wrote the FAQ did this on accident, but none-the-less is now RAW.

True, the FAQ says nothing about having to exit the pod immediately after it lands. You can't re-embark units on it, though, because the FAQ changes the rule Drop Pod Assault on page 22, but the impossibility to re-embrark is written at page 38 and is therefore untouched by the FAQ. And the FAQ specifically says that the Immobilized result can't be repaired in any way, so a Techmarine would be useless in that sense.

I'd say either SW or Ultramarines

SWs have great inexpensive troops to pile out of the Pods whereas the Sternguard with Combis and Combat Squads can pull down multiple enemies per Pod.

Tentatively, I'll vote Wolves.

BUT.

The Space Marine codex is rumored to be out in October, and the timelines coming from Hastings+Faeit have been very accurate. If I were thinking of starting such a large force, I think waiting a few months to see what tricks C:SM will bring is worth it. Iron Hands might get some sick character, maybe Vulken (already awesome) makes a pod list great, maybe Pedro Kantor becomes even better. Maybe Dreadnoughts become super viable again. You never know.

Just my .02

Rule #1 is Look Cool.

Well my question is because I have a chance of getting some well priced pods. Was kind of leaning towards a build like this for an upcoming 2250 in october.

HQ
Pedro -175

Elite
1x 10-man sternguard w/ 10x combi-meltas. in drop pod 335 pts each

1x 10-man sternguard w/ 10x combi-meltas. in drop pod w/ locator beacon 345 pts each

Troops
5x- 10-man tacs w/ 1x melta. (not sure if to add a heavy wep or not( in drop pod 210 pts each

Fast
Stormtalon Gunship w/ Typhoon 145 pts

Heavy
STormraven gunship w/ TL MM 200 pts

Any thoughts on this for a tournament build?

The way I see it, there are 3 good options:

1. First and foremost, Space Wolves. We excel at Drop Pod assaults (both fluff wise and rules wise) and have several different ways to do it. You can take Logan Grimnar and loads of Wolf Guard with Combi-Weapons, or loads of Grey Hunters. You probably don't want to do "pure" Drop Pods in any event, but it is do-able.

2. My second choice would actually be Dark Angels. Specifically, taking Azrael and a Company Command Squad with Standard of Devastation and loads of Tactical Squads. Deploy aggressively and enjoy that Salvo 4! Azrael gives you a 4++ for one of your units even if you have no other cover. Doesn't hurt he's awesome in combat, comes with a Combi-Plasma, can pick any Warlord Trait from the book (I prefer FNP when on an Objective) and makes DW/RW scoring. Speaking of which, you probably at least one Deathwing unit as well. DWA can be handy to support your Drop Pods. Give some of your Drop Pods on Turn 1 Locator Beacons and do a DWA on Turn 2. Enjoy the fun!

3. Crimson Fists (Codex: Space Marines). Take Pedro and load up on Sternguard. Combat Squads + Combi-Weapons is handy. I still prefer PAWG and Logan (Space Wolves) over this, but its a valid option and you can do other fun things like drop in a Thunderfire Cannon (or use TFC to get empty Drop Pods).

I've seen Vanilla Marines as the best option, as Sternguard > Wolfguard after the first drop, especially in a Kantor-led army. The ability to Combat squad, scoring Combi melta units due to Pedro, and the Chapter Tactics/ATSKNF seems a little better as an all comers than Wolves.
