So, reading the CSM fluff on Huron it occurred to me I have no clue what the Astral Claws/ Red Corsairs first founding legion is.

Are they a successor of the Ultramarines, or Imperial Fists, or what?

Well Lexicanum says unknown but likely either Ultramarines or Dark Angels?

Probably Ultras purely as they are the most prevalent.

Almost certainly not Dark Angels, as they would then be privy to The Big Secret.

Ultras most likely, although Imperial Fists could be a possibility

13th Legion, what else ?

Like, most of it is either from the Astral claws or some of their former allies plus renegades and at almost 2/3 of the "lootable" geneseed being from Gulliman , the red corsairs non-13th Legio geneseed would be almost irrelevant.

Imperial Armour V. 9 states that their founding Chapter is unknown, possibly Ultramarines or Dark Angels. Ultramarines is likely because their geneseed is so dominant and the Claws have no association with the Unforgiven. But then their geneseed is unknown, so they have no reason to associate with the Unforgiven.

This thread here on the B&C is a long discussion on why the Astral Claws may be Dark Angel successors, including iconography (a winged lion's head), 'astral' which has some heavenly connotations, Claws like a lion, plus the chapter's personality traits, being a stubborn chapter highly devoted to their cause, with sinister undertones. Not to mention a prevalence of bike squads.

It's inconclusive, as you'd expect, but interesting if it's what you're into.

Just because a Genesee is listed as unknown doesn't mean they don't know who it is, simply that it's never mentioned.

Winged Lions, there are plenty of Chapters with Lions and other celestial bodies in their names.

Being stubborn and dedicated to their cause does not purely mean DA either, with most brands of marines exhibiting this behavior. Imperial Fists worth a mention.

Just because they use lots of bikes doesn't mean Raven Wing either. They are pirates and are primarily raiders. But pre fall and post they did specialise in ship to ship strikes. Not particularly DA specialities.

Claws in their name? Why not Raven Guard?

There's nothing there that matches DA particularly more than anyone else.

There's no mention of any Gene seed deficiencies. So almost certainly not SW BA RG Sallies, possibly IF WE DA um ih.

I'd play caution and say UM was the most likely.
