Thanks, doesn't really answer the question of best armies to face though. Any suggestions on that?

Tau have all the tools necessary to defeat your skimmer armada - missile pods are cheap and plentiful in that army.
I would imagine a farsight bomb, with high yield missile broadsides in heavy support, and some good LOS blocking terrain (or a fortress of redemption) would make the tau very pesky for that list to face.

Thanks tetrisphreak I will try to find an opponent running such a list (not too hard). Any one else got any suggestions?
Oh and what's the range on SMS and missile pods now? Is it 24 and 48?

If I were you I'd like to try my luck against Necron air force with Canoptek Wraith and Annihilation Barge spam. Tau Riptide / Broadside lists with Kroot sniper blobs and the Farsight/Shadowsun bomb. Draigowing/Coteaz Paladin death star with Interceptors, Psyrifle Dreads and/or Dreadknights. Triple Hellturkey CSM lists. Long Fang heavy Space Wolf lists with Guard allies packing Vendettas.
Basically anything that's been doing well in tournaments recently. I would imagine the new Eldar Wave Serpent and Wraithguard spam lists would be pretty tough to crack, too.
Essentially though, any army that's lead by a good general will be worth practicing against, as tactical prowess and good decision making often trumps cookie cutter army builds.

This is my most regular opponent. I can handle that, good call though.
Tau Riptide / Broadside lists with Kroot sniper blobs and the Farsight/Shadowsun bomb.
Similar to the one mentioned earlier definitely looking to face that.
Draigowing/Coteaz Paladin death star with Interceptors, Psyrifle Dreads and/or Dreadknights.
Faced this 4-5 times. Won all of them, tabled 2, so reckon I've got that sorted, MCs and Paladins don't enjoy high rate of fire long range poison shots.
Triple Hellturkey CSM lists.
Good call will find someone playing this, should be fun.
Long Fang heavy Space Wolf lists with Guard allies packing Vendettas.
Space wolves were a frequent opponent of mine, with and without vendettas, until my opponent got so sick of losing he switched armies. No fear of this.

I'm looking for the best army to test against as I can pretty reliably find solid generals. A good he real with an army that exploits my lists weaknesses is the best opponent I find.
Thanks for the advice.

Smart missiles are 30" ignores cover ignores line of sight. S5 4 shots. Missile pods are 36" s7.

Thanks I knew smart ignored cover and line of sight. Hmm, thinking of maybe dropping a unit of TB to add night shields to everything. I'd comfortably out range missile sides then.

Not realistically. The board edge prevents you from unlimited pulling back. If he deploys smartly he can keep you in range even with 30" missile pods. Also crisis suits can move, fire pods, then jump out of sight. This makes getting to objectives, let alone holding them, very difficult. It's by no means a guaranteed loss but a good tau player will put your skimmers on the ground in a hurry.

Night shields would make them range 24.

No missile pods (the s7 ones you should rightly fear) are 36" range assault 2. A crisis suit can move 6" and fire. Tell me again how you can outrange tau with your own 36" weapons? Also you will run out of table eventually. These are 2 reasons why tau will give you a very good battle.
