Hi,

Just a general question here,

If you have a SM captain with a bike, biker squads are troops, does that also mean if you have a SM captain with a Jump pack assault marines become troops?

Cheers for all replies.

There is a rule in the Codex allowing bike squads of at least 5 members can count as troops when a Captain is mounted on a bike. There is no such rule regarding Assault Marines/Vanguard vets should a Captain be equipped with a jump pack. So unfortunately, no, there is no way to run Assault marines as troops in C:SM.

If you want assault troops, run BA.

In my (limited) experience, jump troops are of limited value, no matter what army they come from.

The extra points you pay are for the mobility, and this can be a good thing, but they are no more durable than your regular troops, so you have to pay attention to:

1) What you put them up against. Anything that will shoot/eat your regular troops will do the same to your jump troops, and you'll lose more points in the process.

2) What can shoot at them. Even if you have the perfect target for them, they may still be in range of that artillery unit across the board. Unless you can drop them right into CC on the landing, they may still go "splat", only inches away from their chosen objective. Assault flamers will do the same thing, so pay attention to what sort of guns you're about to land in front of

3) Nearby supporting units. A jump squad may be able to wreck a unit that is understrength, but still holding the objective, but they still have to get clear again, and in the meantime, your opponent can move something up into range to blast the rest of your jetpacks after CC is over.

Vanished Completely

Unless you have a rule that states assault marines are a troop choice, then they can never be a troop choice. It doesn't matter if you have a similar rule that gives you permission to do something similar with another type of unit. This game is not set around the presidents other rules may create, or even logic, but around specific permission provided by the rules as they are written.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

It's high on the wishlists of things we want in the next codex, but there is no rule like that at the moment.

Shadow Captain Korvydae of the Raven guard is a vanilla marine character from one of the imperial armor books that makes assault marines troops.

Thanks guys, was just clearing the air about that.

@Shorttime If I play SW I use sky claws on the same flank as my Long fangs and Razorback to give them some supporting fire against stuff bigger than them.

I almost added "There might be some named character hidden in a FW book somewhere that lets you, but..."

But I'm a core codex only kind of guy, didn't know for sure, and didn't want to muddy the waters. And from the point of view of SM Captains (the HQ entry in the codex) as opposed to SM Captains (the rank of marines leading companies, of which many have special rules) it's a pretty open/shut question.
